1 - Cavernism
2 - Black Coffee
3 - Go Harlem
4 - Jazz Cocktail
5 - Let's Get Together
6 - Wolverine Blues
7 - Wrappen it up
8 - Claps Hands, Here Comes Charlie
9 - Well Git It
10 - Don’t be that way
11 - In the bag
12 - Dancin' with the Debutante
13 - Balls of Fire
14 - Ballin' the Jack
15 - How High the Moon
16 - Swingin' on the Teagarden Gate
17 - Red Bank Boogie
18 - Undecided
19 - Jump Jack Jump
20 - Jivin' the Vibes
21 - Tappin' Off
22 - The Boilermakes Jazz Band, Song Unknown

I just started going through the CD, trying to put an artist to each track. Has anyone figured out the artists for these songs?

I don't have hosting space or I'd post a 30 sec clip of each a la Ron.
Kind of hard to say, since many of those tracks were recorded by multiple people and only a few of the DJs on the list were at the event.

However, I would be willing to bet that
5 - Duke Ellington (example can be found on the Frankie Manning Compilation)
20 - Lionel Hampton

13 - Balls of Fire - Did you mean "Great Balls of Fire" from Jerry Lee Lewis. I checked AllMusic to see if "Balls of Fire" was some swing song that I was unaware of, nothing turned up. Great Balls of Fire can be fun to dance to, but it would stand out from the other song titles on the list, so I don't know.

Balls of Fire is probably "Ball of Fire" which is Gene Krupa.

I'll bet that if you go to balboanation.com and ask (nicely) Marty K. will provide you with the track list with artists.

Now if you want the Invitational J&J track list - you have to ask me (nicely) and I will refer you to the nation where it has been published. :)

I got the list from Balboa Nation (here), where he posted "As for the artist of each song...for some reason I didn't write that down??? I'll remember to next year!"

I'll see about getting 30 second clips posted next week.

OK. So I have the AllBal 2003 DVD with a number of the clips as used in the competition. I'll play through it thiss weekend and see which artists I can pick out with some degree of certainty.

my guesses at the artists (ive never heard the CD, just what I guess the DJs at the All Bal would pick):

1) Earl Hines or Moras Modern Rhythmists
2) Again, probably Earl Hines or Mora
3) Chick Webb
4) Duke Ellington or Mills Blue Rhythm
5) Chick Webb
6) Way too many versions of this song
7) Fletcher Henderson, maybe Gooman
8) Chick, Basie, or Charlie Barnet most likely
9) Tommy Dorsey (it was his theme)
10) Benny Goodman (it was his theme)
11) Lionel Hampton
12) Moras Modern Rhythmists
13) No idea
14) Too many versions
15) Too many versions
16) Jack Teagarden
17) Basie
18) Chick Webb
19) Andy Kirk
20) Lionel Hampton
21) Cab Calloway

This might help you narrow it down.

Slight correction.

Tommy Dorsey's theme was I'm Getting Sentimental over You

Benny Goodman's theme was Let's Dance - opening theme and Goodbye - closing theme

you are right about the goodman one, for the Dorsey one I thought I heard on Ken Burns Jazz that his theme for a time was Well Git It

Well Get It was a Sy Oliver chart (from memory). That places it around 1939 or 1940. This was well after T. Dorsey had established himself.

i found the part in Jazz, and they talk about theme songs and have a picture of Dorsey and are playing Well Git It as the background music, although they never say that was his theme. Thats probably where i put that together.

The lady on Swing Years and beyond on KUOW did a theme song section a couple of Saturday's ago; she played I'm Getting Sentimental over you for Tommy Dorsey's theme song - maybe she went off the same list.

I didn't like most of the theme songs [for dancing] - it seemed like they were something to show the band off or they sounded tired, as they were too familiar.

Of course, the Count, Duke and Jack T all have impeccable taste - even in theme songs ;-)

If you like this, Artie Shaw's "St. Louis Blues" off a 1939 hotel radio broadcast (on Personal Best (The Bluebird Victor Years 1938-45)) has a really similar groove. There're also some Tony Pastor vocals on that, and I've totally fallen in love with his early work.
