Anyone out there making a collection of danceable antiwar songs? "In a World Gone Mad" is a free-download from the Beastie Boys. It's pure hiphop so if you have hiphop lindy dancers, it would work for them. The lyrics are also available at www.beastieboys.com

Any others?

Please keep your politics off the dance floor and outside of dances, completely. DJs are entertainers, not political pundits.

Or should those who emphatically disagree with you ruin your escape by playing the many hundreds of "Bombs away" or "American Patrol" songs from WWII?

I wholeheartadly agree. I keep politics off the dance floor.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I started dancing because it was fun, and it was an escape from the everyday world.

Regardless of how I feel about this war, or war in general, ignoring it is about as possible as ignoring an elephant in the living room. Among dancers in our area, the anti's way outnumber the pro's and I think they would appreciate some good tunes expressing their views - if such music exists. I'm ignoring the drippy Vietnam-era "Kumbaya" stuff they try to sing at the vigils etc. The purpose of my inquiry is to find out if any one has found any good danceable music with an anti-war theme. As we all know, there are plenty of good patriotic "support the troops" type of swing tunes originating from WW2.

You know, when I was young like most of you guys, I used to think being professional and polite meant concealing my political views. Experience has taught me to regret that attitude. That may happen to you, too, in time.

The problem with putting in an anti-war songs, is that those who don't share your view will feel the need to respond. When that happens, you bring unnecessary conflict into the event.

I'm with the "no politics at dances" crowd.

Might want to throw in some anti-abortion or pro-choice protest songs in the same evening to really stir things up if you do though....

Ya, grab a couple of them anti-semetic Swing songs the Germans put out to counteract ours.... i think we'd all like that too

I have specifically avoided patriotic songs when doing my radio show and my dance gigs for that very reason. I don't need some guy walking off in a huff, even if I'd be all for playing them myself.

When I was young, I thought that being an adult meant paying attention to world matters far beyond my control and expressing my naive political views to other people to shake them out of their ignorant complacency. Experience has taught me that most people don't like it when I do so, that I really did so only to self-righteously brag about how much more I had thought about them than they had, and that they started disliking me no matter what I said or how "enlightened" I thought I was. That might happen to you, too, someday.
