Theme Battles

A good fun theme for a DJ battle is Kansas City VS New York, ofcourse you kinda have to use loose rules in deciding which Bands to call from where.

Mike Falty and Myself did this in Herrang, and we made a production about it. We had the two DJ stations up on stage and we made an entrance like Boxers as Chester Hyped us up and annouced us. Ofcourse we did the coin toss and Mike started up, he was playing the N Y stuff. I in turn played the KC stuff. Simple theme that seemed to excite the room or dancers more so then just two DJ that would otherwise be going back and forth. People enjoyed kinda pickin a team and even Dawn,Frankie and Chazz danced the whole time...

I think has the set list we did and he is going to post it....

Hot damn! That sounds fun. So I just have got to ask who did you use for the KC bands There's Basie , Kirk, McShann, Harlen Leonard, Bennie Moten, Mary Lou Willimas, and Big Joe Turner. At least those are the names I can come up with off the top of my head.

Yea, those are pretty much the choices, I think I had a Hot Lips page song in there and a newer Lester Young song ...I didn't use any Big Joe.

ill have to dig it up when i get home.

it was a really great time. the only thing i wished is that they had an arrow pointing to the DJ that was currently playing.

its great battling another DJ. Trying to see what you can do to screw him over, or how to counter, all while playing great music.

Theme battles are great as long as it's not TOO limited. I've done Shaw vs. Basie twice now (me playing Shaw). Now don't get me wrong, I love Artie Shaw, but playing him for about an hour and a half can be a bit much. I like the idea of the region battles a lot more like Kansas City vs. New York and so on.

Oh, I just have discovered that there are other greats out there too

. There's just something about playing Artie Shaw for an hour and a half in one night that's a bit much. It's just hard as a whole to play one distinct sound for an entire night. Gotta mix it up with all the good swingin' music. It's soooo hard to not play any lunceford, or ellington, or basie, or the likes.
