OT - I think I 'joined' Spotify
Ya - I have heard of it, but I didn't know what it did.
I was looking for a tune somewhere and a Spotify play list for Basie turned up. i read (haha) their mega list of 'rules', clicked agree and this play list of tunes from some Basie album went live. Decent computer sound.
So what's up with Spotify? It streams song. That it? Why is it cool?

Here's the deal:
- It's a big library of songs online.
- You can play whatever you like.
- Basic access is free. There are ads.
- It's legal, but artists are unsure about whether it's good for them.
- You can pay for improved service (better sound, no ads).

Very helpful! Thx. The bare facts! In short lines. Direct!trev wrote:Here's the deal:Competing services are Pandora, Rdio, LastFM, Google Play, iTunes Radio.

Where does the content come from? Some of the Basie stuff is a bit 'obscure' amnd varied on this play list-

Ugh! An ad! I killed it. I hate that stuff. So disturbing to hear 21st century crap after a early 20th century musical experience.
Johnny don't wan't no peas and rice and coconut oil and crappy ads.

That's what you "pay" for free access. I pay $10/month for Spotify Premium - no ads! I find Spotify to be a great resource for my musical research, which almost always leads me to more purchases elsewhere after I can easily and quickly search and review full-length tracks/albums.Eyeball wrote: Ugh! Sad thing was that I didn't kill the ad. It began where it left off when I finished playing the Basie track.JesseMiner wrote:That's what you "pay" for free access. I would or will use Spotify in the future. 10 dollars is worth it if you are using it a lot.
Aside from just seeking out random songs, can you create play lists or do they put similar type tunes together for you? Some times it is nice to be surprised.
btw - were you not able to do my avatar?

You can create playlists - and you can also create playlists for offline use (still using Spotify) - I know people who DJ from it.Eyeball wrote:10 dollars is worth it if you are using it a lot.

You can also share playlists with others, have communal lists, follow other users etc - it's bringing in quite a few social network style features.

You can certainly create playlists and share with others. Click on any of the playlists posted in the Swinging Spotify Playlists discussion to get you started.Eyeball wrote: Aside from just seeking out random songs, can you create play lists or do they put similar type tunes together for you? And I will get your avatar fixed shortly - it's on my very long to-do list!

Re: OT - I think I 'joined' Spotify
I remember I was on here once with a list of song titles and someone asked me if I was putting together a Spotify list. I said no and didn't ask what it was. I go through periods of not wanting to learn anything. Now, back to my cave. Haha.straycat wrote:You can create playlists - and you can also create playlists for offline use (still using Spotify) - I know people who DJ from it.Eyeball wrote:10 dollars is worth it if you are using it a lot.

I can't recall what that list was right now, but I think people here were adding titles and I was updating the list for several weeks or months.
