Duke Ellington, Rosa Rio, Louis Prima, Tommy Dorsey

#350 Post by phantom dancer » Mon Mar 05, 2012 4:53 am

Hello Phantom Dancers,

This week’s Phantom Dancer answers the question, ‘How can I best listen to my radio?’ Your question is answered pithily in a 1950s broadcast. After which, you’ll be able to hear this week’s Phantom Dancer broadcasts of orchestras lead by Duke Ellington, Louis Prima, Tommy Dorsey and more with even greater enjoyment. Rosa Rio is also on this show, playing the organ and singing in 1947. She passed away only 10 months ago, still performing professionally at the age of 107!

And this week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week shows an idealised 1940s vision of life after school for Australian kiddies

Mound City Blues Blowers-Phantom Dancer Tues 13 Mar Sat 17 M

#351 Post by phantom dancer » Sun Mar 11, 2012 4:56 am

Who were ‘Our Orchestra’? We’ll hear one of their toe-tapping TRANSCO Radio Transcriptions from Hollywood in 1934 on this week’s Phantom Dancer. But who were they? Maybe you know? If so, please write and say

And, of course, this Tuesday’s and Saturday’s Phantom Dancer is jam-packed with swing and jazz from live 1920s-60s radio & TV. Tune in to hear broadcast excerpts from Duke Ellington, Bob Crosby, Benny Goodman, another swingingly unusual ultra-rare 1944 commercial recording by George Trevare and his Australians, and plenty more

See this week’s play list, broadcast times, live-stream link and Phantom Dancer - The Mound City Blue Blowers singing and playing ‘I Ain’t Got Nobody’ and ‘My Gal Sal’ - by following the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog link with play lists and videos going back to Aug 2009.

Plus another rare track of Australian swing from 1944 by George Trevare’s Orchestra

See the full play list, broadcast times and live stream details plus this week’s Video Of The Week, a delightfully surreal UK GPO film from 1938 on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog...

1929 Brunswick Brevities

#353 Post by phantom dancer » Sun Apr 01, 2012 7:11 am

Hello Phantom Dancers

What a humdinger of a show for you this Tuesday and Saturday

The fourth set of this week’s mix of swing and jazz from live 1920s-60s radio and TV comes from US Radio’s earliest recorded syndicated show – Brunswick Brevities

Showcasing the latest in Brunswick Electrical Records, we’ll hear this week from Red Nichol’s and his Five Pennies, Irving Mills & his Hotsy Totsy Gang, Scrappy Lambert and Hoagy Carmichael

See the play list, station, time and live-stream link AND this week’s Phantom Dancer Video Of the Week, Dame Edna Everage interviews Sean Connery on the radio show blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012 ... brevities/

Phantom Dancer 10 & 14 April + Al Jolson

#354 Post by phantom dancer » Sat Apr 07, 2012 3:22 am

Hello Bakeliters,

Firstly, for those of you who listen to the Phantom Dancer live-stream outside of NSW, daylight saving here is now finished. Phantom Dancer times are now back to +10 hours GMT. You can hear The Phantom Dancer on 2SER Tuesdays 12 noon AEST and Saturday 6pm AEST

Well, there was such a big response from you by email about the set of rare 1920s radio Brunswick Brevities tracks I played for you on last week’s Phantom Dancer, that I’ve programmed even more rare 1920s radio for you this week, in the same spot on the show, the 4th set, so you know when to tune in

Incidentally, for those of you who don’t know, you can contact me, The Phantom Dancer, with your feedback about the show by emailing phantomdancer@2ser.com

The Phantom Dancer plays swing and jazz from live 1920s-1960s radio and TV. I’ve been presenting the show live-to-air over 2SER 107.3 in Sydney every week since 1985

The show is now also live-streamed. You can see this week’s play list, program times and live-stream link on the show blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012....s-radio

Since The Phantom Dancer opens this week with Al Jolson singing ‘Baby Face’ on a Kraft Music Hall Show from 1948, I thought it would fit in nicely to have Mr Jolson sing ‘Baby Face’ in a late 1940s screen test for the Video of the Week

The screen test is not for an audition, but for Larry Parks who played Al Jolson in the biopic ‘Jolson Sings Again’ to study the great man for the film. My favourite part of the screen test is the peculiar way he saunters off after he’s sung his 3 choruses in long shot. He starts off with 3 choruses in mid-shot. (He sings 3 choruses on the Music Hall broadcast, as well). Enjoy the dynamic Al Jolson!

Pete Jolly on TV in 1956

#355 Post by phantom dancer » Sat Apr 14, 2012 4:08 am

Hi-Ho Phantom Dancers,

Hope you enjoyed Lassie ‘singing’ on last week’s show. This Tuesday and Saturday on The Phantom Dancer your highlights include: Charlie Parker on WPIX TV NY in 1949 with Joe Bushkin, Chubby Jackson and George Wettling, Billie Holliday on WNTA TV NJ with Mary Osbourne on guitar (though you can barely hear her) and Mark Murphy on the ‘Stars in Jazz’ TV Show from 1958, hosted by Bobby Troup

Since there’s so much TV on the radio on this week’s Phantom Dancer, this week’s Video Of The Week is a ‘Stars in Jazz’ clip from 1956 featuring pianist Pete Jolly and his trio. The clip was uploaded by Pete Jolly’s son which makes it extra special. And the beverage ad in the middle is a killer. Enjoy!

PS: You can see this week’s Phantom Dancer times, live-streaming link and Video of the Week on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012 ... adio-show/

#358 Post by phantom dancer » Sun May 13, 2012 6:00 am

Hello Phantom Dancers

Big news for The Phantom Dancer!

Starting with this Tuesday's show, I've been invited to upload The Phantom Dancer to CRN, the Community Radio Network, for potential rebroadcast by over 180 community radio stations across Australia

The Phantom Dancer will play live-to-air via satellite Mondays from 18:04 to 19:00 EST, starting Monday 4 June, and repeat the following Monday overnight at 03:00 EST, and of course whenever your local community station chooses to rebroadcast it

So ask your local community station to schedule The Phantom Dancer (that is, unless, of course, you live in Sydney where 2SER is already your local community radio station). Then you can hear The Phantom Dancer on your own local AM, FM or Digital Radio. For licensing reasons, The Phantom Dancer, can still not be podcast. But, The Phantom Dancer is live-streamed from 2SER Sydney – Live-Stream http://www.2ser.com/on-air/streaming

The Phantom Dancer play list on 107.3 2SER Sydney and live-streamed from 2SER this Tuesday and Saturday (it'll be the standby CRN program) features live swing and jazz from 1920s-60s radio & TV by The Inkspots in 1939, Joe Sanders in 1937, Chick Webb in 1939 and Duke Ellington celebrating 25 years in show-business in 1952 and lots more, as always! Happy Listening.

And this week's Phantom Dancer Video of the Week? A most amazing stop-motion animation from 1930. Enjoy the Metal-Eating Bird! See this week's Phantom Dancer play list and 'It's A Bird' (1930) at the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012....on-1930

More swing, jazz and dance from live 1920s-1960s radio & TV as heard twice a week over 2SER 107.3 Sydney and across Australia over your local community radio station via CRN, the Community Radio Network

If your local station doesn’t broadcast The Phantom Dancer, ring them, email them or write to them and ask them, why not?

This week’s Phantom Dancer highlights include Australian recordings from the 40s, 50s and 60s by George Trevare, Red Perskey and Bob Gibson, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie over WJZ New York in 1951 and Enrique Madriguera & His Music Of The Americas with Eddie Gomez from New York’s Copacabana in 1945

And this week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week uses the 1939 recording ‘Im Paradies’ by Adalbert Lutter & his Orchestra for some 1938 film footage of Frankfurt am Main. Enjoy!
