The biggest little band in the land
I'm looking for some John Kirby Sextet. Any recommendations? This looks like a good selection, but I'm not crazy about the sound quality of the Definitive CDs I have.
i have that cd. the sound quality isn't too bad, but it's not mosaic or jsp level. i don't have any identical recordings on another label to compare.
i also have the biggest little band in the land: more 1940-1941. i don't think it's as good as the definitive collection. there's some overlap in titles, but not actual recordings.
finally, i have three volumes of complete associated transcriptions. the sound is, i think, the best on these, especially volumes 1 and 2.
for dj'ing i prefer the definitive complete columbia & rca victor recordings. there's a little more medium tempo stuff there. i don't know that i've played very many things at dances, though. something to do in the future. i just listened to "duke's idea" on volume 2 of the transcriptions set and i like it a lot.
