Anyone heard of Banu Gibson?
I stumbled upon this hot jazz artist based out of michigan the other day. Her band is rich with musicality and tight.
She's also going to Atlanta the weekend after ATLX and I'm thinking about going to see her.
Anyone else hear about her/booked her?
One of her albums: Love
is Good for Anything that Ails You

No clue. I wish I could tell you more, but it was the 'goofy' name that kept m at a distance. And I think I heard her once or twice nd wonder what all the raves were about. She wasn't 'bad', but....she left no deep impression.
Give me Wendy Rea or Renee Olstead any time.

Will big bands ever come back?

OFF TOPIC - This is a great version of the same song. They used either an entire vintage recording from 1937 and possibly augmented it instrumentally, but not sure. Billy May had some arranger credits. Now whoever that vocalist is, can sing!

Nice clip and great music - where did you get the clip? It definitely sounds like a modern recording. If only more modern groups would swing like thisEyeball wrote:OFF TOPIC - This is a great version of the same song. I always like the sequence from the film.
Turns out it is a 1937 recording by Orlando and his Orchestra with a vocal by Phyllis Robbins, neither of which I am familiar with.
I am trying to find out if the original recording was augmented at all.
Ya - too bad so many modern bands just dont get it.

OK, I found it's from the film Pennies From Heaven (1981) starring Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters, directed by Herbert Ross.Eyeball wrote:I always like the sequence from the film.

I'm sure the music used for 'Love is Good for Anything that Ails You' is not from 1937

Sorry - I thought you knew the film it was from because of the title on the video on YouTube, but they only listed BP.
Ya - 1937 tune, never revived. Orlando / Robbins. IMDB confirms. I looked on YT to see if I could find a video of some fan spinning the 78, no luck so far.

The series version of PENNIES FROM HEAVEN was a British production in which they used all British bands and singers from the 1930s. Orlando and his orchestra must have been one of them b/c I dont know his band.

All British and I guess you can download them. If you can post the audio clip on here, that would be great.

Hiya! I frequently play her songs at LindyGroove. You can purchase her songs on eMusic or Amazon MP3 or iTunes
My fav of her songs are
The panic is on
Love me or Leave me (I just played this one tonight at LG too!)
Put the blame on mane
Most of her stuff are more Nawlin-ish. But she does have 2 albums that's swinging trios.
She's also featured on Mr. Jesse's show this month! (and bonus credit to me! Yeay me!)
Hope that helps!
