Shanghai Shuffle
Anyone know of any GREAT versions of this you would spin other than Fletcher's on "Tidal Wave"?
Yes, I know the Wolverines did a rendition.

Bunny Berigan's perhaps... but I'd have to relisten to it before recommending it.

I really like the 1924 Fletcher Henderson version. Not so much for DJing, because the quality is poor, but I love that most of the track is fairly pedestrian, and then Louis Armstrong comes in and swings it so hard that everybody else in the band looks lame. This recording is a great insight into how Louis was so different, and how he taught the Fletcher Henderson band how to swing.

Re: Shanghai Shuffle
Ryan, since you like Henderson's 1934 version (as do I), there's a good chance you'll also like Buster Bailey's 1934 version off of "Sounds of Harlem, Vol. 1" [Hep #1065]. It clocks in at around 220 bpm.Ryan wrote:Anyone know of any GREAT versions of this you would spin other than Fletcher's on "Tidal Wave"?

I can highly recommend getting the CD for the other tracks as well. It's great combo jazz by 1934-1937 Harlem bands, on clear John R.T. Davies transfers, good for deejaying.
