Campus Five in the studio

[Campus Five]

So we're going into the studio next week to record album number three. Here are some of the tracks we're planning to record:

Moppin' and Boppin' - with Josh Collazo on the classic Zutty Singleton drum feature.
Rhythm Itch - this Sir Charles number was just a piano trio, but the riff and shout chorus always sounded to me like a great big band shout chorus, so I wrote it out for a bigger band
Royal Family - the Lionel Hampton riff tune from 1942
A Smo-o-oth One - Charlie Christian riff tune
Gone with What Wind - a Count Basie/ Benny Goodman collaboration
Wholly Cats - another BG/CB/CC riff blues
Bugle Call Rag - taking from the 1944 JATP version
Bei Bist Du Schoen - although we generally wouldn't such a played song with ten-foot stick, we got this as a request at wedding, and we said what the hell, and have been playing it ever since.
Swing, Brother, Swing - we're planing to take this a couple different tempos and see what fits best 170, 190, 210, and 230bpm or so.
I Don't Know About You - we got the idea to do this from Youtube - look up "Peggy Lee" and what this clip. Her and husband, guitarist Dave Barbour, wrote the tune.
As Long As I Live - our version taken from an Anita O'Day recording from 1955, but less boppy.
Judy - Jim Ziegler vocals on this Lionel Hampton tune from 1937
I'm Beginning to See the Light - a small group version of the Harry James take.
Just a Little Bit South of North Carolina - another small group version of a big band tune
I Can't Believe that You're In Love with Me - vocal
Get Off It and Go - Ella Mae Morse boogie woogie tune
Jeepers Creepers - Jim Ziegler vocal, mid tempo
CV Jam - Charlie Ventura penned riff tune on "Sweet Georgia Brown"
One O'Clock Jump - another obvious chesnut that we'd otherwise avoid. I've recently begun digging all of the various versions of this tune, and how many variations the Basie and Goodman bands did over time. We'll use the 1950 Basie Octet version (from the Sauder tv transcription - again check out youtube) as base with some more added riffs.

Jacquet Bounce (Illinois Jacquet)
Sweets (another 1950 Basie octet tune)
Illinois Goes to Chicago (Illinois JAcquet)
It Don't Mean a Thing - again, another chesnut we would generally avoid, but there is a radio DJ who emailed us letting us know that the tune was her theme song, and that if we ever recorded it she could use it on her show. Well, we just jammed it in one take, and it came out great, so why not put it out?

Anyway, I'm hopping to at least equal the record from the first album where we recorded 21 tunes in 6 hours. Maybe we'll even get as many as we did on the last album where we did 25 tunes in 6 hours.

Man, I'm sooo looking forward to ANYTHING you guys make available.

I'm wearing out (physically that is, not musically) my copies of the first two Campus Five CD's when teaching, practising and deejaying here in Uppsala (and Stockholm, Herräng, Gothenburg, London, New York, and other places too).

Can you release low-bitrate samples of all of your takes of Swing, Brother, Swing? I love the song, and I'd have so much fun listening to how it comes out by one band experimenting with tempos!

As far as live stuff goes, there really aren't any audio recordings listening to, but we are planning to put a bunch videos on youtube, including the 'making of" we shot of our first record.

As far as a double, we had four tracks we couldn't fit on the album from kast time, so hopefully, we can keep that up and have left overs on this one. The profitability on smaller releases is pretty low, and considering we can bearly afford to record and put out this album, an EP or something is unlikely. It sort of the same reason we can't do a big band CD - it would cost more than twice as much for a CD we'd still sell at the same price. So if any one wants to finance a JSO CD......

As I've talked about any number of times with different people, I don't ever see a live event where I could get a decent sounding recording without many of the same problems and expense of just doing a studio record. Unless I was incredibily lucky - and I've never been that lucky. The problems being need for a crapload of rehersal, more complicated sound equipment, inability to do even a second take, etc.

Oh, and I forgot a couple other tunes for the C5 record:
Bli-Blip - ala the original Duke version
I Found a New Baby - ala BG / CC
S'Wonderful - sort of like the Hamp version with a call and repsonse during the head.
