The debut of my podcast about swinging jazz and blues, "Hey Mister Jesse," is finally online and available for download. Here's the news item posted on Yehoodi:

Yehoodi.com is proud to present a new podcast for audio lovers. “Hey Mister Jesse”, hosted by internationally known DJ Jesse Miner, is a show that celebrates the swinging music that lindy hoppers and swing dancers love. In the first show Jesse interviews Paul Tillotson, swing pianist extraordinaire, who was mentored by Gene Harris and who played piano with Ron Sunshine. Check out Jesse’s top 8 classic swing songs and hear listener questions (yes, on the very first show)!

For those not familiar, a podcast is content (most commonly audio) that you can download from the internet and play on your computer or portable player. My podcast is an audio show in mp3 format that you can listen to at home or on the go (I listen to podcasts all the time on my iPod). This is a nice change from streamed content that can only be listened to when you are connected to the internet. And even cooler is that beyond being able to download the show, you can also "subscribe" to the show (for free of course!), and then whenever a new show is available, it is automatically downloaded to your computer without you having to go check. iTunes is great software that makes it really easy for you to subscribe to podcasts. Hey Jesse, Great work as usual - I always enjoy your show. The interview with Lavay and Chris was really interesting and I loved hearing about their influences and the relationship between musicians young and old and the dancers.

On the other hand, that new Anita O'Day track was possibly the scariest and saddest piece of music I've heard in a long time. We had trouble sitting thru the whole thing. I'm not sure if the slight echo effect on it was a deliberate effort to smooth over the bumps or an mp3 thing, but I felt the whole thing was a bad idea, which is sad, because I love the concept of still keepin at it that age.

I first was first blown away by Anita (complete with really big hat) when I saw the documentary Jazz On a Summer's Day, recorded at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival. Her voice was so distinctive and incredible and I recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to go check it out. (You get the bonus of seeing Satchmo doing his thing live too)

Trev, Have a listen to the sample tracks on the web link that Jesse gave in the show notes. link They come across a lot better.
I think its great that an 87 year old still being able to produce albums. Her style is very designative.

I agree. I really enjoyed the show and the interview. Did Lavay do a little taste of "Hey Mr Jessie" at the beginning of the show? Loved the gospel selections. Make sure to check out that Wycliffe Gordon gospel album, the Carrie Smith cut alone is worth it. You might also like the Jon Henricks "Evolution of a Blues Song" album that illustrates some of the spirtitual and gospel roots of blues.

I agree too about "Jazz on a Summer Day." Great movie and great slice of time.

That was indeed Lavay Smith on vocals and Chris Siebert on piano doing a taste of "Hey Mister Jesse" at the start of the show. We recorded it right there in their living room after the interview. They sounded amazing!

I'm definitely going to pick up the Wycliffe Gordon ablum. Thanks for the recommendation.

Just listened to No. 4 on my iPod and really enjoyed it. My favourite parts were the Gospel selections and the bit about Chick Webb CDs. The interaction between Jesse and Manu works well. Thanks

Jesse,

Would it be possible to give CD source information for all the tracks you play on the show? In your 8-count swing section on 'swinging spirituals' in show no. 4, I noticed that you did this for some songs, but not for others.

Did you check the show notes for the episode? In the 8-Count Swing section I list CD source information for each song mentioned along with links to those CDs on Amazon.com.
