And interesting that Artie's spirit of antagonism permeates this thread - that's a fitting tribute - lol.

And I never thought about it until I read the CNN obit but perhaps his relationship with dancers was a lot like the ones with his 8 ex-wives. You can't run a dance band and make such swinging music without having some empathy for dancing and dancers

I think there needs to be a seperate thread for the Artie-haters.

Or perhaps you could just accept the fact that someone can have a nuanced view of Artie Shaw, especially since Artie Shaw himself had such a strong (and often negative) personality.

I've been bad and going over Jay McShann CDs this week instead of Artie. I'm going shopping tonight for more Artie tonight, so I'll let you know how it turns out. What I'm planning isn't a all-Shaw tribute night so much as a showcase where I step up Artie's music.

Well I've put together the songs I will choose from, but I'll only be able to select about 15 of these for my show. I'll probably stay away from the obvious ones and concentrate on songs other folks may not always play, so that my audience gets a few new or lesser heard songs. I like it too. It's way more intense than the released album version.

The soundie version is available on CD as part of a collection. I believe its title is something like "Hollywood Swing and Jazz" (and it's rad).

Artie orginally went by the name "Art Shaw", but changed it because it sounded like a sneeze.

I have to share this with you folks.

I went into the radio station today to signup for some studio time to record my show. When I went in I was told that I had numerous calls about my show last week. That was the Artie Shaw tribute. The comments were mostly about how they really enjoyed my enthusiasm, and that they could tell that I really enjoyed the music. During the show I shared with the listeners some of what we've talked about on this forum, about how Artie didn't necessarily care for the dancers as much as the dancers cared for him and such...

At any rate, it was really cool to hear that just playing and talking about the things I enjoy got a good responce from my listeners. Things like that can make your day

Hrmm, this isn't the one I was thinking of... though it does have a couple good things.

The one i'm thinking of is a single CD, and has a version of a Harry James songs from a movie (2 Girls and a Sailor or somethign).... the song is titled something like "Young man with a horn", and it's not the slow song of the same name by James. Reuben pasted a link for me once, but I lost it.

The CD Julius is talking about that has the Vitaphone version of "Oh Lady, Be Good" is:

The one Jesse is talking about is called:

Harry James and His Music Makers - 1942-1944 - Harry For Hollywood - Flyright

This CD has the song "The Young Man With A Horn" straight from the film Two Girls and a Sailor, the quality is "eh" but it's definetly a great song, it has a really cool buildup...The music builds as Arthur Walsh dances (if you can call it that) with June Allyson...

I got my copy at Amoeba in Hollywood in the soundtracks section.
