You know, forget it. Thread would have fallen apart anyway.

Not sure. I admittedly don't own much Shaw, by way of impulse buying. I'm doing a half-way tribute dance this weekend, so we'll see then.Nate Dogg wrote:So, everybody
When you do your Artie Shaw tribute, what songs would you play?

I played "Begin the Beguine" on Thursday, it gets played occasionally by another DJ and it was his most famous recording. I also played "Blues (From The Lenox Avenue Suite) (Part 2)."mousethief wrote:Not sure. I admittedly don't own much Shaw, by way of impulse buying. Quite frankly, I had not played much of his music the past, even after picking up a few of his CDs.

Rayned, great list.
I don't play a lot of Shaw, but there are some dancers who absolutely love dancing to his music, so I usually make it a point to throw in a selection or two.
Some of my favorites that I play (and will continue to play in tribute to Shaw's great dance cuts):
Oh Lady Be Good
Man From Mars
Traffic Jam
Back Bay Shuffle
Diga Diga Do

I played my all time favorite, When the Quails Come Back to San Quenten; there were other songs I was going to play but ran out of time and didn't get to two thirds of the music I wanted to play.Travis wrote:I played a few Shaw songs last Sunday while splitting the night with Kevin T. Hardly a tribute but my choices were:
St. Louis Blues
Oh Lady Be Good
Sweet Sue
Shaw is the first artist whose work I started seriously collecting. Lot's of good stuff.

My band played these for New Years in San Diego:
Man From Mars
Carioca
Comin' On
Bedford Drive
I was also tempted to play "There'll Be Some Changes Made", and to have the Campus Five play "Hop, Skip and Jump."

"‘Swing’ is an adjective or a verb, not a noun. All jazz musicians should swing. There is no such thing as a ’swing band’ in music.”-

I don't have near enough Artie in my collection, but some of my favorites are "Any old Time", "My Blue Heaven", "When the Quails come to San Quentin", "Summit Ridge Drive", and "Sweet Adeline" (from the 1939 live broadcasts). I'm dj'ing tomorrow so I'll probably play several of them.
And interesting that Artie's spirit of antagonism permeates this thread - that's a fitting tribute - lol.
And I never thought about it until I read the CNN obit but perhaps his relationship with dancers was a lot like the ones with his 8 ex-wives. You can't run a dance band and make such swinging music without having some empathy for dancing and dancers.
