Anyone ever play his stuff? I just ripped one of his CDs, a collection of ragtime classics, so this sparked my curiosity.

I dig Joplin, but I do not play his stuff. Let's face it. It does not swing.

The definition of 'swing' is always frustrating. I think I need to take some kind of class.

ha ha - lessons offered free of charge here from the hive mind

Since some dancers in Seattle are becoming more interested in earlier styles of dance I've been tempted to play Joplin -- I agree you can't lindy hop to it, but I bet you could cake walk and charleston to it just fine.

One problem though might be tempo variation - of what I can remember the tempo varies quite a bit because it's mostly solo piano --- same problem you encounter with some Fats Waller and Earl Hines tracks --- and definitely with Art Tatum.

Hey Brenda, didn't the hive mind classify Joplin as jank? I mean, he pre-dates the swing era.

being that jank refers to a style of lindy hop and associated music you can do said style to, I don't think Joplin quite qualifies; but I'll have to ask their opinions when the jank masters come to Seattle this May.

I recently bought 3 early Chicago CDs (Big Band Chicago, Chicago Black Small Bands, Chicago White Small Bands). The Big Band Chicago is kind of funny since most of it is late 20's, early 30's.

Anyhow, there is a version of Maple Leaf Rag on there that's worth trying out. Definitely Charleston music - I'll tell Leigh we are looking for some jank possum.

historically ragtime (of the scott joplin, fully scored piano solo variety) is not really dance music, it's based on dance forms like bach's "sarabande"s that aren't really sarabandes.

of course, a certain type of music not being dance music never stopped a SWING dj, either
