Artie Shaw gone wrong - 1950

#1 Post by Eyeball » Thu Feb 26, 2009 6:29 pm

Speak To Me Of Love 10-inch album (Decca 1950)

Someone sent this to me. It's a big Shaw band with strings playing classic standards, quite syrupy.

The worst part is that they have a man and a woman speaking the song lyrics as Shaw and the band play in the background.

When they stop talking, it's listenable as over-blown easy listening or even lounge music.

I'm playing it now and it is fairly unbearable.

If the original session tapes still exist, they could re-issue it w/o the 'vocals'. Or not.

It's rare, too, I suppose b/c very few people bought it.

One of the few mis-fires of Shaw's musical career.

From what I've read, Artie would agree! :)

Did he bad-mouth it? Why did he even do it? I really had to turn it off. It was like listening to your Mom and Dad talking poetically and trying to be romantic. Brutal!
