SwingDJs: The Band

#1 Post by falty411 » Mon Mar 08, 2004 5:53 pm

Someone said if we love live music so much we should all start playing instruments. I think this would be HILARIOUS and really really fun. Its too bad we all live so far away.

So who would the bands be? Who plays what instruments?

I play guitar, bass and drums......all not great, but tell me what to do and i can do it!

Whos the bandleader? Whos playing trumpet, drums, sax, vocals?

I used to play trumpet, but I've been hittin vocals here in NYC lately.

Who's gonna decide what tempo we play in?

Soupbone plays the drums; I played tenor and bari sax in jazz bands in college, although my first instrument is the clarinet.

I'm toying with the idea of picking up a soprano and learning some Bechet solos. Count me in!

I also have a half way decent voice. If Ray Nance can sing, so can I ;-)

I could play that instrument you used to play in elementary school that's just two sticks that you hit together.

It's easy to sit there and say you'd like to have more money. And I guess that's what I like about it. It's easy. Just sitting there, rocking back and forth, wanting that money.

upright bass here!

am i the only who loves swing songs where you can hear the the bass slap the neck the whole time?

like in bennie moten's lafayette or luis russell early 30's stuff...

i can play it if i owned one we had one in high school and i was on it all the time...and i've seriously been thinking of purchasing one for a while...

if i could pick up one instrument that i didn't know tho it would be trumpet hands down...

I think that's all they're called: Sticks

I play african drums, which some groups have used for swing accompaniment around here. I've been looking for an excuse to play more recently, dancing is taking up too much time ;)

You're at least one of two.

Make that one of three :)

Unlike some of the Americal Idol try-outs, I know I have no musical talent. But I'll volunteer as roadie :)

As Brenda said, i play drums. I also play upright bass and guitar, and I'm learning tenor banjo right now.

I really hope to put together a hot jazz group here in Seattle once I get settled into a house and job and such. I'd like to do something like Henderson's Dixie Stompers or even some Jelly Roll Morton.

I've got perfect pitch, I think? (I can sing/whistle in tune.) No vibrato or tone...but I can hum our A/Bb.

I'd definitely take up practicing the violin regularly again if I could play jazz with other amateurs who like the music but are as rusty as I! I had a goal to get good by Binge, bring my fiddle, & hope there'd be some down time to jam w/ a band, but then Peter Vawter was there, and I still sucked, so I was glad I didn't.

I keep telling you people that I'll play the triangle. It's value as a musical instrument is vastly underrated.

I can also volunteer to be the Hot Groupie! :P
