Baby it's Cold Outside - Ray Charles version
Drop me off in Harlem - Victrola (Austin's own)
St' James Infirmary - from Metropolis Soundtrack
Murder, He Says - surprisingly Tori Amos (from Mona Lisa Smile Soundtrack) the Dinah Shore version wasn't that impressive, though I was told that the Anita O'Day version was compable, haven't found it yet.
Lullaby the Birdland - Ella & Duke

I have the Anita O'Day version. Maybe some Sunday when I'm in Houston you can take a listen.Moonmist wrote:Current favs:

Yard work sucks. I would much rather dj.
Mention of Commodore made me realize I've been listening to the Commodore Story double cd set.
There is some monster stuff on this. I wouldn't exactly call them my favorites as I haven't listened to them 100 times in a row, but dude, Memphis Blues with Muggsy Spanier and The Sheik of Araby with Sidney De Paris are killer.

"I've Found a New Baby" - Basie, from The Golden Years, Vol. 3. It's about 315 BPM, it's got a Lester Young solo in the middle, and it's got that barreling rhythm-section. I like the song anyway, and this version is like a fireworks display.
"Angry" - Earl Hines, from 1934-1937.
"Radio Rhythm" - Fletcher Henderson, from Tidal Wave.

I think I know the version you mean. It's pretty rad.Matthew wrote:"I've Found a New Baby" - Basie, from The Golden Years, Vol. 3. "In my opinion, out of the ten great guitarists in the world, Django is five of them!" - Rex Stewart
Yes I believe it is. I do not have my music with me right now so I can't be sure. The version I have is great I would love to give the "California Concerts" a listen though. I hope you have your book at PDX.djstarr wrote:Is this with Velma Middelton? There is a live version on the "California Concerts" box set --- it's got great energy.sonofvu wrote:Big Butter and Egg Man

Wow that is always tough. Right now my brain is full of guitar music, so I'll start with some of those:
George Van Eps playing "Tea for Two" - Amazing performance
Barry Galbraith - The entire LP "Guitar and the Wind" - Great arranging by Billy Byers and Al Cohn
Herb Ellis - 52nd St Theme - HYPER fast live version with Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown
George Barnes - I'm just now discovering him and his touch on electric guitar just melts me.
Granted most of these are not dance things, but still they are finding a special place in my musical mind.
For Dance stuff, a new CD that every swing dance DJ should check out is Jimmy Rushing called "Five Feet of Soul". Reissue of GREAT roulette session arranged by Al Cohn. You swing dance DJs will LOVE this one!!!
