Dude, it's the silouette of a guy in a Zoot Suit (Riot) from the Cherry Poppin Daddies CD cover. C'mon, man, know your Neo-crap!!

Or were you kidding...? (I would interpret it as something to be proud of if you honestly did not know what that CD was.)

I honestly did not know what that CD was. Good, I do not have it.
Yard work sucks. I would much rather dj.

I'll bring you my copy next week, plus the three other Cherry Poppin Daddy CDs I bought in 1996/97 that I've been unsuccessfully trying to sell on Half.com for $2.

(Actually, I think they got de-listed because they were unsold for too long.)

That is too funny. By the way, if you do bring that to the Fed and you try to sell it to me then I don't know you OK? :) :)

Buck Clayton: The Classic Swing of Buck Clayton.
Bad sound quality.

Lester Young: The Complete Small Combo Sessions on Verve, 1939-51. Horrid sound quality, and some...interesting...instrumentation.

Grover Mitchell and the Count Basie Orchestra: Count Plays Duke. nothing with energy on it.

Count Basie: April In Paris. Boring.

I got this 3-CD set for $16.00, which seemed like a great deal (the same place had also offered the Decca Basie for the same price). It may actually have been a good deal, but the sound quality on many of the tracks is terrible. I read the Amazon reviews after buying it. Grrr...

If you don't want it I'll buy it off of you. I've been wanting it for a long time, and the reason the sound quality isn't up to par is because they're REALLY old recordings.

Mal Hallett on Swing Time...

Quite possibly the worst audio restoration work I've heard in my entire life...it's sad too because there aren't any other Mal Hallett CD's commercially available (this was Krupa's band before Goodman)...

So bad where the restoration adds artificial sounds to the recording...digital hiss and screeches all over the place...stay away...

I think I'm going to keep it for the learning potential. Thanks, though.

Terrible recording quality / remastering job. On a few of the tracks it actually sounds like the record is intentionally slowed down temporarily and then allowed to speed back up -- messing with the pitch. I think there are better recordings elsewhere of many of these songs... Darktown Strutter's Ball is kinda nice, though.

I think I've got that one too, and I gave up on the idea that I'd ever use anything on it...

here's my contribution:

Musically, man, I bet it's killer..

but since they're basically nothing but the drum mic, it's a little hard to tell.

(there's actually 3 discs, and they're all poorly produced)

I think that cover would scare me off before I even had a chance to check out the recording quality!

haha yea i had my anxieties about it, but -- if you're getting basie live in 38 and 39... it's hard to pass up. Thankfully I didn't pay much for it; bought it used.

I recently picked up Sing Along With Basie from the bargain bin (on vinyl) just so I could hear the lyrics to Jumpin' at the Woodside & Every Tub. I wish I hadn't, it's God-awful. I can't believe AMG gives it 4 stars.
