Who do you play most?
Which musician's music do you tend to play most often when you spin? Do you play your favorite the most, or does your scene prefer another musician? Also, among those you play regularly, who do you play least?
I've been spinning for a short time, and not on a regular basis, so I'm not sure who I play most. There are usually many people, including those from my school, who know only ECS, and they prefer rockabilly or something like The Faint. Also, the lindy crowd often requests hip-hop. Even though Basie's my favorite, it's certainly not him, as the scene usually wants something else ("Maaaatt, stop playing this old stuff, and play some swing!").

Basie, Earl Hines, and Lucky Milander I play the most
Ellington, Ella, Benny Carter, and Gene Harris are close behind
I got the Count the Duke and the Earl maybe I should start getting some stuff by the king

To answer your question, I play Ella most often. I definitely favor vocalists.

My knee jerk reaction is, of course, Basie and Ellington. (Josh Ellinger once gave me what I considered the ultimate compliment when he noted in a group conversation: "If you don't like Basie, you won't like Lawrence's DJ'ing.") The first several pages of my DJ book are filled with nothing but Basie and Ellington compilations. I probably have also played Charles Brown from the 1990s about as often as Dave plays Gene Harris. (Quite often)
However, upon reflection, I realize that they dominated my sets a year ago and beyond, but not so much, anymore. In part, I don't want to be redundant and keep playing the same stuff all the time. As such, I generally don't play too much of any one musician (or at least so I think). There's just too much great stuff out there.
I also consider it part of the challenge to keep changing it up and playing new material, including gems about which nobody knows: like the Rod Stewart version of "Having a Party" off his MTV Unplugged album that someone reviled in another thread.

I've been really enjoying Ellington pre-1940 lately. I've been playing him the most for sure. But it all depends on my mood.

Buster Smith? Really? Do you have music I don't know about or do you just heavily rotate the seven(!) songs from The Legendary Buster Smith?Drew wrote:Above all else:
Count Basie
Bennie Moten
Jay McShann
Duke Ellington
Honorable Mention:
Pete Johnson, Buster Smith, Lester Young, Slim and Slam
As for me, I'd have to say Basie just based on the sheer number of songs/recordings I own. I'll have to go through my setlists and see if I'm right, though.
