How long should individual swing or DJ sets be?

#1 Post by whatsalindy » Sun Oct 16, 2016 12:27 pm

So just curious and looking to hear from the swing/blues DJ's especially.
Assuming you will be at a event with 3-4 hours for the dance with DJ'ed music only splitting the time with other DJ's.
From what you know about yourself and how dancers react would you prefer to DJ longer or shorter sets?

sorry not sure which forum topic this should go into, so I guessed this would be most appropriate :)
Thanks!

I'm selfish (?) and prefer to DJ the whole three or four hours!

When I have split in the past, I've always preferred longer sets.

Depends if I want to dance. Also depends on interruptions - . But 90 minutes is good - 45 just feels too short to really make the most of a set, feel the floor, create a flow, make some waves, and really work the atmosphere.

Also - 90 contigous minutes. Preferrable (for example) to two 45 minutes sets.

I agree 45minutes is too short to really get a groove going. I say 60-90 minutes is the minimum.

I was always partial to full evening slots when DJing regularly. When I had to share, I preferred spit evenings, a continuous half for each DJ, and maybe a bit of time trading song-for-song near the end of the evening if the DJs have a good rapport.

I prefer shorter sets. I've done quite a few nights where we've had, say, 2 DJs alternating, doing 2 sets each. When we've done alternating 45 minute sets I think it's worked well. I find if I do long sets of several hours, I get mentally tired.
