[Answered] New Orleans Bump, The Lucky Dogs Jazz Band

#1 Post by Jorge Oliveira » Mon Dec 16, 2013 7:38 am

Hi, folks!

My name is Jorge and I'm a Brazilian Lindy Hopper and a begginner Swing DJ (sorry, my english is terrible).

I'm trying to find the band that plays this version of "New Orleans Bump" cuz I know this is not the Jelly Roll Morton version of it.

Please, can anyone help me?

Thanks a lot!

Someone answered your question on Youtube - they said it's by Wynton Marsalis. The one on this collection is similar, but the one they're dancing to is slower - perhaps another recording by the same artist?

I'm not convinced it is Wynton Marsalis - I've only ever found the one version of his, and this is very different.

But whoever it is, I want it....

Yeah, It's not the Wynton Marsalis version...

I notice that there is a double bass in the beginning of the song on that version of the Youtube video, and it is not on the other versions that I've listened to... :(

Given that the OP said specifically "I know this is not the Jelly Roll Morton version", I think you'll have to do a little better than that.

(Both of Morton's 1929 recordings of the tune use tuba, while the one in the video is using a string bass. Moreover, there are no other recordings by Morton of the tune in Bruyninckx's discography.)

This version of New Orleans Bump is by The Solomon Douglas Swingtet, I believe. The albums is "Ain't No School Like Old School."

I don't think this is Solomon's arrangement -his drummer has a lot of emphasis on snare which is missing here. This is very noticeable on the break /"slow" part.
From listening I *think* this version is slowed down as well, but I'm not sure (listen to the horns in the beginning).

Agreed. Unless he's done another one that I've not heard, which is quite possible, it's very different.

A couple of things over and above what you've said:
The bass solo at the beginning is bowed on Solomon's, and plucked on this one.
The drum rhythms are quite different - this one has almost a tango feel.

This one's been bugging me ever since Jorge first posted about it.

The good news - found it - it's listed on the ILHC website as being by The Lucky Dogs Jazz band.

The bad news - I can't find any of their music on sale anywhere - their website doesn't exist, and their Facebook page hasn't been updated in three years - so I assume they've disbanded?

Anyone know how to get hold of this?

What I would do is track down one of the band members on FB, most likely the band leader Mikey Freedom Hart, and send him a message about it. But that's just me...
