Exit Strategy
Okay, you had a hot floor, but your next choice kills the mood, how do you recover? How important is it that you recover, and I'm not necessarily saying swing, but weddings and other events?

When I was CD based....and a song BOMBED....
I would stop the song...just hit "pause". Take the CD out of the tray and throw (a different, probably blank CD....because my CDs were burned in pairs with 20-ish songs on them each) onto the floor. I'd get on the mic and tell the dancers to get the bad song...stomp on it....jump up and down....destroy that CD!!!
You could get away with that once every few weeks. It helped to restore the mood, people had fun, and there was an "obvious" transition away from the bad song.
Of course, this was in 1995. [/i]

This happens to the best of us on occasion. We as DJs are more critical than our audiences for the most part, likely exaggerating how badly the song went over. I prefer a smooth transition, not drawing additional attention to the mistake. I would let the song end naturally, transition right away with a tried-and-true floor-packing hit and move on with the event, making a mental note about the song in question for future reference.
