Straighten Up And Fly Right

#1 Post by Haydn » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:13 am

I've been struggling to find really good sounding releases of this song, especially the original Nat King Cole version. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Good Nat King Cole version on this collection:

http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Nat-Ki ... 189&sr=1-1

I like the version by Girls From Mars:

http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Swing-Girl ... 373&sr=1-1

Also like "cool" version by Australian jazz singer Vince Jones:

http://www.amazon.com/All-Colours-Vince ... ep_wlb_dpt

Re a Nat King Cole version...

I downloaded the version from the album "It's Only A Paper Moon" from Amazon, but that's no longer available by the looks of things

However, this sample sounds nice and clean...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Straighten-Righ ... 228&sr=1-2

There are a few other good copies in the 102 listed on Amazon UK too.

Cheers Russell. Love the "Girls from Mars" CD - super cool modern small group swing - just downloaded the whole album :D

Sounds nice, but it's the later version. I'm really hunting the more energetic original (recorded in 1943 I think). This one is 2m 37secs, the original is 2m 27.

Serious swing DJs should of course acquire Mosaic #138: "The Complete Capitol Recordings of the Nat King Cole Trio" (18 CDs or 27 LPs). It has both the 1943 and the 1961 studio versions. It's o.o.p. but can be bought used for only about $999!

If you aren't super picky, give a listen to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/With_Respect_to_Nat

This is the only album (that I know of) where Oscar Peterson sings. Apparently he didn't do it very often because his voice sounds EXACTLY like Nat King Cole, and I am not exaggerating one bit.

Along the same lines . . .

If you like Nat King Cole Trio, you have to check out "Remembering Mr. Cole" by Joe Bourne and the Gary Moran Trio.

Their version of "Satchel Mouth Baby" is one of the most swingin' trio songs I've ever heard. I also like their versions of "Sunny Side of The Street", "Frim Fram Sauce", and "Sweet Loraine".

(No version of Straighten Up and Fly Right though.)
