CD mixes that won't play on some players....

#1 Post by moxielll » Sat Dec 05, 2009 8:55 am

What is it that makes my CD mixes play on some CD players, but do not
play on other players?

There are several reasons that a burned CD might not play on a particular CD player.

If you are burning a "music" CD, the best advice is to change your burning options to burn slower. CDR's burned at 8x have the highest success rate.

If you are burning a data CD with mp3's on it, many CD players that will play mp3's will not play VBR encoded mp3's. In general, VBR encoding should be avoided and CBR should be used instead. The additional space savings is not worth the hassle.

To be on the safe side as far as compatibility with all CD players goes:

1. ALWAYS record your mixes in CD AUDIO format (file extension "CDA" for all tracks). Although some CD players can handle data CDs containing MP3 files, that's not what they're really designed for. Sometimes when you think you've found a CD player that can handle MP3 files - you find that it's only PARTIALLY able to deal with them and it screws up a lot. You don't want to ever have to deal with that during a show!

2. NEVER record your mixes on a rewritable (CD-RW) disc. They play fine on the RW/DVD burner you made them on, but (like MP3 files) the CD-RW format is not standard for "play only" CD/DVD players - so many of them just display an error message when you try to feed one to them.
