The "old" type of cards are actually called "PC-Card" these days, and have a specific form factor, meaning the size of the slot, the connector etc. (Actually there are a couple of different thicknesses defined.)

The PC-Card cards are internally of two different forms. The older one is PCMCIA which uses the old ISA bus in the computer. The new one is called CardBus and uses the PCI bus to talk to the computer.

Then there's the new kid on the block, the Express Card, which is smaller and with a smaller connector and generally incompatible with the older slots. I think it uses PCI Express and maybe optionally USB internally.

Technical enough for you?

I have the USB version of the X-Fi and it's pretty great so far. There's not a lot of good Expresscard sound cards yet. Personally if I were you I would buy the Creative X-Fi or wait for the Echo Indigo DJ express card that should be coming out in mid-october.

I called Echo today to see if they were developing an Express Card version of the Indigo DJ. Well, they are... and from what they told me, it should be out by mid October.
That's the question I was coming to ask :D

I totally need a new laptop...but won't give up my echo sound card.

I'm flattered that anyone remembers me on the boards. I don't have much time to post anymore. Still here in Boston....And that would be about 10 years of Lindy DJing to go with my recent Westie shananigans...now venturing into two-step as well.

Yeah. I use it. It sounds fantastic. They have an express card version of the same thing though if you want something non-USB.

Is that the same card that people were talking about a few posts above?

No, that's the X-Fi card.
The Xmod connects to a USB port. I'm curious what people think of the XMod too.

The Echo Indigo DJ Express Card won't hit the market until late December now. I called today and it got pushed back a few months.

So I'm pimping a MacBook Pro now... are there still no ExpressCard/34 sound cards available? Creative's got a /54 model... but no /34.

I decided to order one of these anyway[/quote]

OK, this post was a year old, but I'll give it a shot: Where did you order it from? I haven't found any place online that will ship the Turtle Beach sound cards outside the USA.

A lot of this goes totally over my head, but there's some good reading about soundcards in there: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=41241.0
