What Lead Jazz Instrument Speaks To You?

Post here to discuss and give your alternatives / other favorites. Personally, Trumpet is often my thing outside of the rhythm section.

Given the way you wrote the categories, I was only given one possible choice....

assuming Jack T is playing the trombone, there is nothing better.

Lester Young on sax, with that soft, wide sound. There may be solos that swing harder, jump more, etc., but I understand his playing on a spiritual level.

Might depend a little bit on who plays the instrument, but I do have a soft spot for a soulful tenor sax. If it's Lester Young playing, in particular. Or Ben Webster. Oh, and also Johnny Hodges on alto. But then I don't have to choose between those, do I? Neat.

I often have trouble telling the difference between a trumpet & a trombone if I'm dancing instead of listening closely. I voted "trumpet," but I wish I could've split it between "trumpet" & "trombone."

Their common sound effects speak to me more often than common sax sound effects.

Can I choose "all of the above"? 8)

(except perhaps violin: not even Stuff Smith works for me)

Damn. TWO jonathan stouts and only one clarinet? Must be some Jazz Manouche here or something.

Gotta go with the sax although it really depends who's playing. I don't really dig the mule honking (if you can't play it well, play it loud) style but I love Hodges, The Pres, Bechet, and many others.

Trumpet probably appeals to me the least as a solo instrument, usually it's played a wee bit too harsh for my taste.

I like other less conventional string instruments too.

I'm the wierdo who likes drum and bass solos... though I suppose those are out of the "lead" category.
Of those I can vote for, I'd have to go guitar... cause I play a mean guitar... hero II.
