Favourite recording of ... "Mama don't allow it"?

#1 Post by lipi » Wed Apr 04, 2007 9:14 pm

o.k., i only have one swinging version, but i'd like to find more. the one i have is julia lee (off the proper introduction "that's what i like") with benny carter and red norvo.

i see some country versions on itunes. allmusic shows a huge number of versions under "momma/mama don't allow/like (it)", including one by bunny berigan that sounds o.k. in the clip.

anyone play any of these?

The Southside Aces play it at most gigs, but I don't think they've recorded it yet. I also haven't had the luxury of having someone to dance with at such a gig, so I'm not sure.

You could e-mail them (http://www.southsideaces.com/) and ask them to put it on their next CD. *shrug*

Anyway, great song. Fun songs about playing music rock my world.

The Ozzie Nelson is very very good.

And that one in the old cartoon is immortal. I think an owl sings it.
Will big bands ever come back?

A fun version is on With Thee I Swing, Mark Shane & Terrry Blaine. You can also get it on this reissue with additional tracks.

Hee hee--don't worry, my Southside Aces mention was a shameless plug, too, Paul! ;-)
