Exchange DJ set length times – What is your preference?

#1 Post by Bob the Builder » Tue Nov 29, 2005 7:23 pm

We (Melbourne) have just had out Melbourne Lindy Exchange. I was in charge to coordinating the DJ’s over the weekend. I was trying to ensure every DJ got a minimum of 90 minutes set and most got a 120 minute set.
The reason I did this, is because in my opinion a Good DJ will work the room a lot better in these kind of set times rater than a short set.
The down side is it reduces the number of DJ’s you can have.
What’s your view on Set lengths for experienced DJ’s at large events?

At SoFlex I give each DJ a 60 minute set. I think a good DJ can set a mood over 60 minutes. I will also schedule each DJ to play at least 2 sets and possibly 3 or 4.

60 minutes is a little on the short side especially if there are mishaps; starting late, equipment failure etc. 2 djs who work well together doing 2 hours trading off is good, however that all depends on the 2 djs. I think 90 min. would be optimum to showcase a dj.

As both a DJ and a dancer I'd much prefer 4 DJs at 90-120+ minutes apiece over 8 DJs for 45-60 minutes each. Unfortunately I'm in the minority these days.

Organizers are too afraid to say no to any DJ that knocks on their door.

That's not my experience. I've been turned down when I requested to DJ at events/exchanges that I did not know any of the organizers. I have also denied a few people when they requested to DJ at SoFlex. I usually schedule DJs who have been DJing for at least 4 years around the US.

What's my overall preference?

Zero minutes for DJs. All bands, all the time.
