Jook Joint @ ECBF (10/28-10/30) - Submit Your CDs!

#1 Post by LindyChef » Thu Aug 18, 2005 6:56 pm

One of the goals for the Emerald City Blues Festival was to reconnect the blues dance scene with the roots of blues dance and what could be more quinessential to the origins of blues dance than a jook joint? So we decided to have a jook joint inspired afterhours dance, where a jukebox would be playing all the music - people would simply put in their quarters and choose what was being played.

When it came time to decide how to fill the jukebox, we wanted to allow DJs that weren't coming to the festival a chance to still participate and represent their scenes. So we hit upon the idea of asking you, our fellow DJs, to help stock the jukebox.

If this sounds at all interesting to you, send your CD along with a a standard sized CD insert (one page is fine) with CD title, DJ name, DJ's scene, and a listing of tracks (some descriptions might be helpful - bpm, musical style, etc). Send it to:

Emerald City Blues Festival

1726 15th Ave #12

Note: To allay any fears, I want to reassure you that none of these CDs will be ripped. Period. They're for the jukebox and the jukebox only.

Oh, and one last thing. Please no Eva Cassidy - Wade in the Water, Babyface - Fire, or the like ... please ;)

I think this is an awesome idea. There's an outside shot I can make it to Emerald City, but if I can't I'd love to submit a CD.

I'll be in touch! ;)

Wow, this actually sounds pretty neat. Especially if I "mislabel" all my tracks.

Just kidding. It might be nice if we compared CDs so there isn't too much overlap. I'd hate to wrestle with putting X number of songs on a CD only to discover that I could have squeezed some other song on because I have a few overlaps with someone else.

Tell you what ... if you guys post your CD info as you send them in, I'll also post CDs from DJ's that send them in that aren't on this board, that way there's a running track of what's being put in the machine.

This is the CD I've burned but not yet mailed:

1. Down the Street 'Round the Corner Blues, Lawrence Brown
2. Trouble In Mind, Dinah Washington
3. Jeep's Blues, Roomful of Blues
4. Drown In My Own Tears, Ray Charles
5. Tin Roof Blues, Roy Eldridge
6. How Long Blues, Jimmy Yancey
7. Mournful Blues, Jimmy Yancey
8. Kindhearted Woman Blues, Keb' Mo
9. Makin' Whoopee, Louis Armstrong and O.P.
10. You've Got The Right Key But The Wrong Key Hole, Bob French and the Tuxedo Jazz Band
11. Summertime, Sidney Bechet
12. Blues In Orbit, Duke Ellington
13. Snowy Morning Blues, Dick Hyman
14. You Can't Tell The Difference After Dark, Topsy Chapman
15. Pie Eye's Blues, Duke Ellington
16. Jammin' the Blues, Duke Heitger (this is 237 bpm :)
17. Dippermouth Blues (aka Sugarfoot Stomp), Dwayne Burns
18. Give It Up Or Let Me Go, Karrin Allyson (this is a 248 bpm country music boogie, hahahaha)

I was listening to it in my car today and I think I may have to make some substitutions. I don't like the Yancey as much anymore.

You Gotta Move Mississippi Fred McDowell
Fiesta in Blue Count Basie

So, how's this been going? I was wondering if you're able to post anything yet? So far I don't see much worry for overlap, but I'd want to avoid this issue too...

Do you want a short description of the songs? Tittle, Artist, BPM, Energy Level ...something like that?

Laurie and I are closing on a house so we're crazy busy, but I was thinking I could make a CD or two on the plane ride to Seattle ...is that too late?

So far I've only gotten CDs from people that've posted their lists here, but I'm expecting more to come in the weeks before the festival. And actually bringing them with yourself to the festival won't be too late :)
