Hey Everyone!!!

Ok, so I have been lurking this board forever but I thought I'd jump in this thread (which I just found) and say hi! to all those fellow...hmmm, herrangee's.

I had a great time at Herrang, both DJ'ing and dancing to the tunes that everyone played. I agree with what a lot of people have sayed. Spinning for people dancing inside a sauna is always hard. I got many of the late nights during weeks 2 & 3 and by 4:00am the floor had emptied enough that dancers could actually move and dance to all kind of tempos without getting a heat stroke or feel like they wereplaying lindy-fu because of the many times one gets kicked during the fster tempos when the floor was crowded. However, this experience has given me a good experience to think fast on the DJ booth.

I must say, my favorite night to spin was when I got a time slot on week 3 downstairs at the dance barna (or dance banana like many called it).

The hardest night to DJ was Blues Night. The organizers had very strict views as to what they wanted played in tht night and most of us did not come fully prepared to satisfy those needs. I love DJ'ing Blues, but, well, it wasn't exactly blues what they were asking for. However I am going through my CD's (yes all 400+ of them and making up a good collection to take with me to Blues Night at Herrang for next year

Anyway, I can't wait for next year and I hope I can make it up to the Lindy Never-ever land again.

no, they were only looking for blues, just not delta blues, or guitar blues, or what most blues dancers dance to (which that isnt even normally blues). They were looking for classic jazz blues, trying to build an atmosphere of a 20s speakeasy with people playing poker and smoking cigars all in suits. Its kind of hard to build that with barbara morrison blaring in the background.

it was definitly blues music the organizers were looking for as i was in half of the meetings for blues night and heard what was accepted. The type of blues is just probably what you arent used to DJing.

Example of good songs for blues night in Herrang:

Black and Tan Fantasy - Duke
St. Louis Blues - Bessie Smith
Summertime - Sidney Bechet
West End Blues - Louis Armstrong
Stingaree Blues - King Oliver
I thought I heard Buddy Bolden Say - The Dream Team

I understand it was difficult for you with your preconcieved notion of what blues is/supposed to be, but to listen to those songs above and say they arent blues would be a shame.

I should have read my post before sumbmitting.

What I actually meant is that whatthey asked us to DJ was not blues I usually play. The organizers are definitely in search of a very vintage feeling for the night which I was not expecting from my experiences at STLBX and Cheap Thrills and many other Blues realted events. I am not saying it was not Blues, just that it was just challenging having to play Blues in that style ALL night. There is a lot of good classic Jazz Blues out there, I just was not expecting having to play so much of it. That's why I am getting ready for it from now

For some reason I knew thats what you meant, but I just wanted to make sure people didnt get the impression that Blues isnt played on blues night. Cant wait to see what you have in store for next year!

Neither can I. Right now is a search and rescue for songs. The hunt goes on...Find out at Herrang 2005

Versions I like are on Henry Red Allen's "World on a String" and Roy Eldridge's "Little Jazz and the Jimmy Ryan All-Stars" but I'm pretty sure neither of these are the version they danced to.
Hopefully it was Lou Rawls' version .. "Easy Listening" my ass.

you know, some people on this board would probably agree with A&B Sound in Vancouver and vote that "Easy Listening" is the most appropriate genre for Lou Rawls

They'd probably also say that Lou isn't suitable for blues night in Herrang (lol). But I digress.... time to start another thread.

True, some would. But where you put him depends on how you grew up and when you encountered him. Many would also put him under soul, or urban contemporary, or R&B or whatever the race records designation of their day was.
