Rhythm and Bugs 1 Year Anniversary Celebration, February 26th, 2005

Peabody and Charleston Workshops with Chad and Midori, Main Dance with the Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra (NYC) and DJed After Hours Dancing!

Can you believe it’s been one year already? We can’t either but it’s certainly true, and so as promised we are going to make our first anniversary a night to remember! We’ll be having workshops, a main dance in a beautiful historic ballroom to a live band and if you still aren’t tired after that a DJed after hours dance.

Workshops with Chad and Midori (NYC) at the Contemporary Club Ballroom, Trenton, N.J.

Put a little 20s roar into your dancing with a little 20s Charleston and Peabody. Favorite of the flappers and grand-pappy of jazz dances, the Charleston swept the nation onto its feet in the 1920s with kicking, strutting, and stomping social dancing abandon. Peabody, a fast-moving one-step dance created by a portly New York police captain, captivated NYC in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s (and probably 10’s) as dancers citywide raced around ballroom floors. Chad & Midori have spent the past two plus years researching these dances. These workshops highlight some steps rediscovered in their investigations.

Chad and Midori will be teaching 2, 2 hour workshops. The first covers Peabody the second covers Charleston.

All Levels Peabody I & II
Designed for both beginners and more advanced dancers, these two workshopscover standard single rhythm patterns of the peabody such as the walk, 8-ct turn, grapevine, and 4-ct rock turn; syncopated double-time steps, such as the check n' run and the prince charming; and quintessential mixed rhythm patterns, particularly the lock n' run, Roseland hop, fallaway grapevine and
the Cagney shuffle.

All Levels Charleston I & II
Designed for both beginners and more advanced dancers, these two workshops cover both fun and foundational charleston steps, such as the basic(including swivel action), charleston walks, bicycle kicks, crazy
legs, turns, promenade as well as more fascinating moves, such as the crossbody basic, traveling Charleston, the breakaway, basic box, and Chicago box.

Times:

All Levels Peabody I & II - 2pm - 4pm

All Levels Charleston I & II - 4pm - 6pm

Main Dance with the Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra (NYC) at the historic Contemporary Club Ballroom, Trenton, N.J.

The Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra is a 11-piece ensemble of young, dapper dandies in the authentic fashion of the original dance bands of the 1920s. Arenella's authentic transcriptions reawaken the original arrangements of the 1920s, the hottest epoch in jazz and rhythm. The era of flappers, flivvers, spats and speakeasies emerges from the past and is brought to life by Michael Arenella's Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra. We are excited and fortunate to have such a great orchestra play for our 1 year anniversary. It also fitting that this band play in the historic Contemporary Club Ballroom which itself was built in the 1920’s and reflects the era perfectly. Be prepared for quite an experience and get ready to practice what you’ve learned in the workshops!

Time: 8pm - 11pm

Cost: $15

After Hours DJed Dance at the St. Matthias Episcopal Church Hall in Hamilton, N.J.

Less than 10 minutes away from the Contemporary Club Ballroom, come and see where are regular dances have been all this year! If this is your first time at our dance this space will definetly grow on you. The floor is great and the space is intimate.

Time: 11:30pm - 2:30am
Cost: FREE (if you paid for the previous dance, $5 otherwise)

Limited Housing IS available for this event, the earlier you preregister the more likely we can guarantee it for you.

Preregistrations are already coming in!

This is shaping up to be our largest event yet! Plus we have more good news, we have three more volunteer spots left for those who want to save money on the workshops. If you are able to volunteer you will get half off on the workshops, that’s a 20 dollar savings. Volunteering involves working the door, moving tables and chairs, possibly driving those who don’t have cars, it’s pretty easy work so email us ASAP if you are interested in volunteering, once those slots are taken, they’re gone…
