Bwah! LOLROTF. Wondering when somone would say it. Though I'm surprised the Marvin Gay book didn't make the list; seems like you you hear him at every exchange, okay not the whole book just several songs night after night after night ...

Most of the songs Jesse listed aren't really played much anymore. At least I haven't heard most of them at exchanges and once in awhile when I pull one of them out of my book, I get a lot of "WOW, I haven't heard that in awhile."

While not a definitive list by any means, the 25 songs I listed have been widely popular amongst Lindy Hoppers over the past 5 years, not only at exchanges. These songs have stood the test of time, have had a major impact on our generation of Lindy Hoppers and are now part of our history. I wouldn't hesistate to play any one of them when I DJ, and I regularly do play many. I never tire of hearing or dancing to these classics.

I would add these:

Satin Doll - Count Basie Orchestra (from "Live at the Sands Before Frank")
You're Driving Me Crazy (aka Moten Swing) - Joe Turner
School Days - Dizzy Gillespie
Jump Ditty - Joe Carroll w/ the Ray Bryant Quintet
I Diddle - Dinah Washington

Ironicaly enough, that is exactly what I was thinking when you were "LOLROTF" at Jesse's list. 8)

Wow Drew, thanks for the double nod there. I didn't even know "Every Tub" is floating around out there. I'll have to get you some of our new album.

If you look carefully, my comment was directed at Travis, not Jesse or Jesse's list. If anything it looks more like I was flicking Travis.

I received it from Marcelo as payment for renting my PowerBook to record at Showdown. Hence, unreleased.

I'd add these to the "time tested or quickly got overplayed" list:

My baby just cares for me -Niana Simone
Okay for baby - Big 18
Celleary stalks at midnight - Big 18
Beyond the sea -Dean martin or that neo-swing group, uh...
More - "
Fly me to the moon Frank & Basie at the Sands
I love being here with you (live or studio) - Ernestine Anderson
Jump session -Slim & Slam
Flat foot floogie - "
The groove juice special - "
Bits and pieces - Gatemouth Brown
I diddle -LCJO
Straighten up and fly right
Fire - (can't remember?!?)
Information blues - Duke Robbilard
Sweet georgia Brown - Alberta Hunter
Darktown Strutters Ball - "
By the bend in the river - Betty Carter
This bitter earth - Laverne Butler
Do nothing till you hear from me - NK Cole or Mose Allison
Dat Dere - Oscar ???
Cement mixer _ Alvino Rey
Fine Brown Frame - Lou Rawls or Nellie Lutcher
Smack dab in the middle - Gene harris and Jack McDuff

That's 25 -but... this list is endless!!!

I'm with Jesse on this familly of music. It has become part of our history -as short as that may be so far. Hehe.
There are a lot of people who haven't heard many of these great songs because DJs are tired of playing/hearing them.

Meanwhile, I'd guess Reuben would sit in the corner and scowl through all of this stuff, so I'd like to hear from the other side of the fence too...? :)

Is there a ULHS "3 year favs" list in anyone's head?

Oscar Brown, Jr. did it on Sin, Soul and Then Some. That is the version that go overplayed in my region.

How can "Dark town strutters ball" be something reuben would scowel over... I'd be surprised.

There are quite a few good versions of that tune.

Yep, , thanks Nate. It's the best version in my mind. James Williams' version is good too. Bobby's is really nice, but since it's missing the lyrics, it's missing a lot (not that it isn't a beautiful piece of music as an instrumental; it is).

Have you heard her version? I love it, but I'd be surprised if Reuben listed it as a favorite version (?). Not to mention a 1/25 ratio sucks ;) Hehehe...
Of course life would be boring if we all liked the same stuff...

Am I missing something? It's a question, not a statement...
