Proper Sets Best? Worst? Next?

#1 Post by Jitters » Mon May 10, 2004 9:44 am

What Properboxes do you own? Which one's are best? Worst? Is there any you have your eye on.

I own:

Louis Armstrong: Satchmo in the Fourties
Count Basie: The Count Basie Story
Sydney Bechet: The Sydney Bechet Story
Duke Ellington: Masterpieces, 1926-1949
Slim Gailiard: Laughing In Rhythm
Lionel Hampton: The Lionel Hampton Story
Johnny Hodges: The Jeep is Jumpin'
Lester Young: The Lester Young Story

My favorites are the Basie Box and the Hampton Box. The Lester Young Box is good but has a lot of overlap with the Basie Box. The Duke Ellington Box is great but I already had many of the songs. I was considering buying the Django Box next, any other suggestions?

The Louis Jordan set is excellent. Not having much Louis Jordan in my collection, it quickly became my main amount of Jordan material.

The Spike Jones is also excellent, but it is not dance music.

In the proper pairs I have the Lucky Millinder and Ted Heath. I would guess the Lucky would be much more consistent for dance needs. Both are excellent.

In fact in thinking about the Proper label, I honestly can't think of any I own which I don't enjoy.

The "Good News" box set is an interesting collection of early recording history / Gospel. I thoroughly enjoy listening to it, but it's not very useful for DJing. The Sister Rosette Thorpe set is more accessible, methinks.

My favourite Proper box set so far has been Illinois Jacquet.

I think the best is the Bechet one, the sound quality and song selections are amazing...next is Ellington as a close second...

Proper boxsets that I have:

Bechet
Ellington
Hampton
Miller
O'Day

For Django I would get the JSP boxset over the Proper one...

I own:

Duke Ellington
Count Base
Lionel Hampton
Glenn Miller
Wynonie Harris
Hittin' on All Six
Ben Webster
"Gettin' Funky"
Louis Jordan
Slim Gaillard
The Big Horn
Illinois Jacquet
T-Bone Walker
Sidney Bechet
Anita O'Day
Hoosier Hot Shots

I like 'em all, though some more than others. I haven't bought a box set I didn't like from Proper. Obviously I didn't buy it all just for dance music though.
