Big Band Radio Recordings

#1 Post by Bob the Builder » Sun Apr 04, 2004 8:12 pm

I’ve discovered that I seem to have a liking for classic big band radio recordings.
Sometimes the sound quality my not be as good (sometimes it better), but the energy and drive behind the band is just great. This may be due to some of these recording to be Ballroom radio broad casts.
Here are some of the one’s I’ve really enjoyed.

Radio Years 1940 – Ella Fitzgerald
Standing tall – Chick Webb (1939)
Benny Goodman and his Rhythm Makers Volume 2 – Original 1935 Radio Transcriptions.

Has anyone got some other Radio recordings that really like?

I'm finding the same thing. I've got the first three (of four) CDs of the Basie Golden Years series, and they're spectacular.

i have a Laserlight Benny Goodman set that purports to be a "best-of" but it's actually a very unusual broadcast. of course, no indication as to when, where, or who.

buying any anything by laserlight is a real risk. I own a few, but the quality is horrible.

Another angle on radio braodcast transcriptions is the dialog.

I have quite a few Stan Kenton radio things from 40s and early 50s. Stan was quite the dry humorist. This comes across very clearly as he introduces songs and/or band members.

Then with Kenton you get to hear many songs that Kenton never recorded in a studio. Most of these are left out for some reason or another. But the fact Stan would use them in broadcasts meant he thought enough of the chart to let the band blow.

Another perspective on the radio transcriptions.

Why are they going to disappear? Have you read or heard something. Or is this speculation?

at risk of derailing the conversation...
Yes. The old Past Perfect discs are liscensced for sale in Europe, and probably are wide available there for a normal CD price. The company has changed the format of their releases -- you can visit http://www.pastperfect.com/ to see the new shiny happy line of the same exact stuff in different packaging, for $16 per disc :( . The old edition of the line is being dumped on the American market (probably breaking international liscenscing contracts) because they are remaindered merchandise. That is why they are so cheap. The discs are slowly but surely disappearing from the catalog.

I got all this information from Bill at the Copacetic Comics Company. Believe me, he knows what he's talking about when he talks about the market... These CDs will disappear.

Yeah, they did an AFR Jubillee show. The tracks I have on a Stash "Woman in Jazz" box set are from that mostly, I think.

Three tracks from International Sweethearts of Rhythm are in this set that Doug mentioned. The set is readily available (at least it was a couple of years ago when I bought it) and I would recommend it.
