I can't figure out how to search for two or more words separated by a space. i.e. in Google one would type "duke ellington," and in eBay one would type (duke ellington). is such a search possible on this board?

(such a search! such a search! say it out loud)

There are two ways to do this:

1. Include the word AND between each word you want to search on. Example: Duke AND Ellington.

2. Select the "Search for all terms" radio button under the search text box.

Both methods should produce the same results.

no, that just looks for posts that include both words irrespective of if they're near each other.

this makes a problem if, for example, as i was a couple of days ago, you're searching for "willie smith." lots of posts have willie and smith but that doesn't mean they talk about willie smith.

Thanks for the clarification. It looks like what you are asking for isn't currently implemented in phpbb2's search functionality. I will keep my eyes peeled for some mod that would increase the flexibility of the search.

For now, the suggestions about should get you close to what you want, but yes, you will need to wade through varying amounts of unwanted results (thankfully not that many in your example of "Willie Smith").

You could always wait a couple of weeks for google to cache it ...

Otherwise, you could search for both terms and get the results as posts ... then when the results come up, use you're browser to search the text of the page for your term.

Firefox does a great job of doing this.
