Favorite Records Stores, online or brick and mortar

#1 Post by Nate Dogg » Wed Jun 04, 2003 8:22 am

Occasionally, I see links and references to places that you can find particular recordings. I thought it would be a good idea to set up a thread where we could list good sources for music.

Not a big discussion thread, not a whole of commentary to be added, but I see this as a great reference thread, one that we can search on as we travel or search for that hard to find disc.

To kick it off, a few of the more obvious stores ...

Online:
www.half.com
www.ebay.com (affiliated with half.com, but I often find stuff on eBay that is not available on half.com).
www.amazon.com

MP3:
iTunes
eMusic

Brick in Mortar:
In Austin - Cheapo, Waterloo records, various CD Warehouse locations, Jupiter Records.
Nationally, Amoeba in L.A/San Fran

A few more that may be familiar, but are still useful.

CD Universe lets you preview nearly every track of almost every CD.

FYE also lets you preview much of the music, but at different points than does CD Universe (for example, 1:20 instead of 0:30)

GEMM has tons of hard-to-find recordings.

Let me take this opportunity to remind you that I have added a Links section designed for listing websites (see link to this at the top of every page), and there is a section specifically for music sources:

Links: Music Sources

The categories are flexible, so when there is a need for a new category of links, it can easily be created. I hope this becomes more utilized in the future.

By all means, continue this conversation but remember to post your links there as well.

Jesse

I've had pretty good luck with www.djangos.com . You can specify that they notify you when they have a used copy of something in.

Wow, just bought $110 worth @ CD Cellar here in Falls Church, VA. Newly discovered place. So I can't call it a favorite yet.

Bought some nice Ellington, Basie, Barnet, Charlie Shavers/Maxine Sullivan, Betty Roche, Fats Waller, Woody Herman, Roy Eldridge, and a handful of others. Non-swing, but a Bill Withers CD.... nice listening. Maybe when I'm not in a hurry to go teach a lesson, I'll actually put the CD names down here.

http://www.cheap-cds.com consistently has the lowest prices and speedy USPS first-class shipping which is very reasonably priced.

Support the local shops when possible

Ah, the old thread got bumped up.

I just want to say that I got visit Amoeba during the fall. I love those stores. I am so jealous of the California DJs in that regard.

Many of the Past Perfect discs are available at Half Price Books. The stores have lots of them, they must have a deal worked or something (similarly, many of the budget Bethlehem Records CDs seem to be at every store as well). Most of the CDs are dirt cheap and new. When I walk into the local store, they have a big display filled with Past Perfect discs. You can also listen to some of them at the listening stations.

They have a good number of locations Texas and they have locations all over the U.S.

Some locations have good selection of used CDs, it really depends on the location.

http://www.halfpricebooks.com/ - Their online store has Past Perfect discs.
