Why do you need a DJ name (and how do you find a good one)?

#1 Post by Haydn » Fri May 04, 2007 6:37 am

I couldn't see another thread on this.

Why do you need a DJ name? In dance music, everyone has a DJ name. In the swing scene, some DJs have DJ names, and some don't.

So, why do you need one? And how do you choose an effective one?

I figure a DJ name is similar to a blues name, so you can get some ideas from the "Make your own Blues name starter kit" from the ever-popular, how to sing the blues tutorial.
19. Make your own Blues name (starter kit):

a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.)
b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc.)
c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.)

For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc.

(Well, maybe not "Kiwi.")

So you don't need one, and some people might frown on you for having one . But why do some DJs have DJ names, and why do some promoters expect you to have one? What positive benefits does a DJ name give a DJ?

Lawrence already answered your first question, and the answer to the second can be surmised from the first.

In our scene, there have been FOUR women who have the same name with similar spelling, with two of us being active volunteers. In cases like these, I encourage YOU to come up with a nickname before other people do.

No one has explained why you should or should not have a DJ name.
