Extracting streaming sound from your computer

In the past, I've used Goldwave. But recently (when I tried to convert the Storyville sample RAMs to MP3s), it's been really distorting the sound it's recording--I've tried playing w/ various settings, and it's always made it tinny/"warped" for the last month or so. I uninstalled it and cleared it out of my registry to get that toll thing to go away...but it still has the problems.
So can you suggest some other free software out there for extracting sound off my computer to WAV? I can still use Goldwave for editing and such...I just need something besides the Sound Recorder that comes w/ Windows, as that can only handle a minute, and some clips are longer than that.
