New CD Anti-piracy Scheme

#1 Post by Toon Town Dave » Wed Oct 08, 2003 4:38 pm

It looks like one of the latest attempts at CD anti-piracy is a borderline waste of time.

It relies on the "autorun" feature of Windoze. For those of us who have that turned off on our system, those who don't run Windoze and anyone who knows the shift key trick in the article, this is a pointless effort.

The scary part is for Windows users that leave auto-run enabled, the record companies now have precedent of launching their own software off a CD ... it could easily search your system for mp3's and phone home if they wanted it to. Those who break have trouble with the foot pedal and cup holder on their PC will be particularly vulnerable to something like this.

*shrugs* It's not illegal to have MP3s on your computer system. If they want to call home let 'em, spyware is just going to piss off the consumer more.
