i remember when swifty was in a horrible car accident and the insurance company reimbursed him for his broken cd's, including something like $24 for a YALLOPIN' HOUNDS cd - almost worth the accident to rid the world of one of those...

Haha! Six CDs in my trunk were broken in clear in half from the impact.

I looked online for the most expensive quotes for each of the CDs and faxed them to the insurance company of the woman that rear-ended me. They didn't even ask to see the broken CDs or for other quotes. I should have told them it was more. I got about 3-4 great used CDs for each of the six I lost.

If it makes you feel any better, thanks to some evil loophole, insurance is refusing to pay for a years worth of doctors visits.

Insurance issues

Not only collection insurance, but liability insurance is needed. I have been to many venues that would not allow a dj to set up without a $1,000,000.00 Liability policy in effect.

Yeah, that's Dj G over there; under the CD Bins, digging contently in the 45 rpm box :)

I've heard that required of the organizer by the venue, but never the DJ, unless he/she happens to also be the organizer.

Either way, a liability policy of this size is rare but not unheard of.

Anecdote:

After 9/11 things got pretty scary in NY - insurance wise!

For Roseland, the policy was $5 million. Clear Channel did not want any risk to their enterprise. I think the deductible was something like $100,000 though.

Thanks for the link Drew!

I've heard this about the US. I've seen DJs advertise on their site that they have liability insurance. But I'm a little confused. What liabilities does a DJ face? Can you be sued for the music you play?

You can be sued when that person trips over the cable wire you left along the floor.
I've heard of speakers being asked if they have Liabilty insurance just for getting up at a conferance and saying a few words.
Its a pitty thinks are the way they are.
