Is anyone else here on Ping?

I'm not sure of it's value yet, but I figure if a bunch of us were using it, it might become interesting.

I did sign up for an account (feel free to send me a friend request!) and have visited a handful of times (to respond to a few friend requests - including Trev's just now - and to follow Nikki Yanofsky) but nothing has been compelling enough to bring me back.

Yes, Ping has an empty not-quite-there feel about it. Kinda like MySpace :)

Speaking of social networks for music sharing, maybe I'm late to the party, but I was introduced to 8tracks by dogpossum recently when I was looking into all this and it's far more useful and engaging. You basically make the equivalent of a mixtape and put it online for people to listen to and comment on. I'd much rather see the swing DJ community get involved in that.

I'm here: 8tracks.com/theswingdj for the curious.

Oh yeah, I totally love 8tracks. It has a really nice, clean layout, and I like the simple like/comment features. I also dig the way I can embed it in my blog, or on faceplant.

Call me cynical and/or paranoid but from the little I've seen of Ping it felt as much about Apple trying to get their feet in the door of social networking (+ get plenty of useful marketing data on it's users) as it did providing a service that will be of genuine benefit to people. I'd take a Mac over a PC any day of the week, but I have misgivings over how much control they and other cuddly companies (potentially) have over the online music industry and don't particularly want to give them any more control into how I listen to or buy my music.

Spotify has been a MASSIVE boon to me - admittedly it doesn't have everything on there, but it gives me the scope for listening to albums first / checking recording qualities / experimenting with playlists before I actually shell out + has widened my music knowledge and awareness no end.

Loving the look of this 8tracks site, going to check it out fully later.

Speaking of Spotify (which I haven't used), this got my attention today:

The table doesn't list eMusic.

That's certainly interesting - although the statistics are used to illustrate one specific argument. One of the strengths of Spotify for me is that it is a listening post, so I know what I'm getting before I go elsewhere and buy it.

Hey, great hint with 8tracks! I just created a profile: http://8tracks.com/chrisbe

I'm also on Ping, but I don't really use/like it so far. I was wondering what Apple will do to make it more appealing...
