I have been DJing for a few years with the following configuration:

1) HP Laptop running Windows Vista
2) Queuing songs with Itunes thru the internal sound card
3) Playing songs with Winamp witn a external sound card (Turtle Beach USB Sound Card).

I have set up Winamp to output the songs to the external sound card (turtle beach). Recenlty I have been getting a Microsoft.net Framework error. I click continue and Winamp keeps on working.

However, my sound now gives me some crackling noises that I cannot find a resolution for it. If I use the internal sound card to output the music, no problem. As soon as I go back to outputting to the Turtle Beach. Same crackling noises.

Things that I have done:

1) Changed to a different Turtle Beach Card.
2) Updated Windows Vista
3) Changed USB Ports
4) Re-installed Winamp multiple times.
5) Use a two prong no ground adapter.
6) Tested with different amp and still the same problem.

Can someone throw me a bone here?

I have no ideas to try but I can say that I have not encountered a problem with the same configuration under Windows XP.

By "recently", do you mean the past 2 or 3 weeks?

- try updating the turtle beach drivers
- try updating the usb controller (or rolling back the driver?)
- change your output mode (typically one of these: direct out, ASIO, WASAPI)

That's all I can think of right now.

Or throw out that Turtle Beach card entirely. I did some testing, and the quality of the Turtle Beach (or one of those other cheapy USB keys) was actually worse than that from the headphone jack on my laptop.

I checked overall signal swing and signal to noise ratio... the cheapy USB keys just don't work as well as the slightly more spendy DJ-oriented models.

Keith, what are you using those days? Perhaps is time for me to upgrade the Turtle Beach. I am looking for better quality.

This started happening some 2 months ago. I just updated the Turtle Beach driver. It got better for a while and then I had the same problems last week for a couple of songs. I haven't updated the USB drives on the computer yet. Perhaps that will help.

I have it. I like it. It's simple and has two outs if your software requires that (e.g., Traktor).

Thanks for the reply Rayned. I am going to buy and check it out.

I have an Echo Indigo DJx, which is ExpressCard so YMMV. Very few modern laptops have any kind of card slots whatsoever.

I really liked the old version of the Echo Indigo DJ (pcmcia card slot) when I still had a computer that could use it.

There's a new version of the Turtle Beach usb coming out soon. Similar devices in that price range are the Siberia Steelseries USB and the Terratec Dual USB.

I've got oscilloscope shots somewhere, if you want me to post 'em.

KitKat - no, there are USB options, but none of them cost $25. Native Instruments sells one, as does Numark. Both of them are fine.

I just prefer a card-slot based one because it's one less thing that's floating around loose in my bag that could need power or a cable or could get lost.

Also, if you end up using Traktor for cue/play, it'll only output to a single device, so a USB option like the Turtle Beach won't get you cue capability.
