The Echo Indigo DJ sound card is fantastic.
For mobile laptop DJing there is nothing close to it, in regard to its Cost, Size, Ease of use and high quality output.
If you can afford it, get one.

I bought an Indigo DJ last year and it fried itself the second time I used it in my mac. I went for the Griffin iMic (much cheaper anyway) and have been happy since.

I thought Mac's finally supported PCMCIA. Dunno, don't care about Macs myself :P

the newer powerbooks do, but I personally like the little package of the ibook and refuse to be swayed by the latest and greatest technology in that respect.

PC laptops in my opinion still leave a lot to be desired, especially in battery life/performance balancing, build quality, cooling, price, etc....
You know, the reasons why one buys a laptop instead of a desktop.

I'll give you that. I know a few people who love PCs, but bought an iBook because of how good of a laptop design they are. I've considred it myself from time to time, but it wouldn't work for me. I have far to many PC related needs since I use my laptop for work a lot too.

If you want to have wider options in regard audio you get a PC. Mac’s having the advantage in this area, is so 4 years ago.

This is what I use, an old Creative Soundblaster MP3. The sound has been perfect for every room that I've DJ'd in from large hall to small bar room setting even outdoors at the Calatrava.
I am using the Creative Audigy 2 NX... Not sure if it is still available, but, it is a nice USB 2.0 Dolby 7.1 enabled sound card that has a lot of toys for us deejays... Time shifting, noise and pop reduction, pitch adjustment, etc... Plus, it works on laptops and desktops equally well... Unfortunately, it is Windows-only...

I've recently tried an Edirol UA-1EX external USB sound card with my iMac G5 -

It's quite cheap and easy to install. I'm not quite sure, but I think the sound is better.

But the Volume Logic plug-in -

- which I like, doesn't work properly with it :(

hear hear... a little research and shopping does indeed reveal wider options for the pc... much wider.

BTW, they were talking about external sound cards over at a lecture about swing djing that michael gamble was teaching at the touch of class event. i forgot exactly what model that gina was saying people should get.

since we're talking laptops here, simply put: baloney. all external soundcards will work just as well on macs as they will on wintel boxes; all the common hardware interfaces are shared. the (usually fairly useless) applications that come with the device may not run on os x, but that's all.

(an internal card for a desktop system is another matter.)

The Turtle Beach ones don't work on Macs. I know because I wanted to buy one for my Mac ...

you know they don't work because you tried one and it didn't work, or you know they don't work because you read the webpage you linked and it listed only windows? unless it's the former, i still call baloney.[/list]
