Austin Lindy Exchange 5 is set for Sep 17 - 19. The website will be completed soon, we expect registration to open between mid June and the beginning of July. Most likely, mid June, I will have details soon.

If you are planning on attending and are interested in being considered for a DJ spot, let me know via PM. We will have several bands this and we have a good number of regional and national DJs that will be returning this year. So, I can't promise anything. However, I would like to get an idea for who is out there and interested.

The County Line Texas BBQ is one of my favorite restaurants. Can't wait to go there in August when I visit the family...

I took 25 or so Exchange goers to County Line last year. It is always a popular place to go (both of them).

Ryan, try to visit the Fed on Thursday when you are down.

Theresa and I got engaged on Valentine's Day 2003 just before going to a BBQ joint in Austin. Powerful stuff. :)

We posed for a photo with a giant rib... that looked a bit like a... well... dookie. See it here:

It *may* have been at County Line. Does the place that photo look familiar Nate? If so, tasty stuff.

I remember the Fed! I went there ages ago, back in 1999. Hopefully I'll be in Austin on a Thursday (we're driving all over the place).

The County Line for BBQ in Austin is actually regarded somewhat like going to Outback for steak: good, but not great, and there are at least five or six that are much better in the area. Like Outback, it is also a chain.

The Salt Lick is where you want to go, my friend. House Park Barbecue (lunch only), Stubb's, Iron Works, and Rudy's are also better than County Line, in that order. Jeramie Anderson swears by Artz Rib House. Sam's on the East side is also somewhat legendary, although it tastes more like "Soul Food" than barbecue to me.

For the true "no-sauce" barbecue experience, Kreutz's or Smitty's in Lockhart, 1/2 hour due South, is some of the best you will ever taste. One notch below the Salt Lick.

That said, the Lake Austin branch of the County Line does have a really great atmosphere.

For a list of some Austin-Area BBQ joints:

Whoa. Thanks for all the advice. I'll have to pass it on to the parents, uncles and aunts, who will be making the ultimate restaurant decisions.

Is the Lake Austin branch of the County Line the one that's on the river?

Yes. "Lake" Austin is actually one of three local "Lakes" created by damning the Colorado River in three spots. Only one of them barely resembles an actual lake (Lake Travis). Lake Austin and Town Lake meander through the hills for miles, rarely if ever get over 400 feet across, and look just like rivers from start to finish. Coming from Chicago and growing up on the Lake Michigan lakefront, the use of the term "Lake" to describe these sections of the Colorado River has always been somewhat of a joke to me, but that is what they are called.

(FYI, the "Colorado River" in Austin is not connected to the better-known "Colorado River" that created the Grand Canyon and makes the border between California and Arizona. (That would be impossible because they are on opposite sides of the Continental Divide.) The Texas Colorado River is entirely within Texas: it begins near the southwestern portion of the panhandle and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The name dates back to 1690, long before the "other" Colorado River was even discovered by European settlers. The Colorado River is also the reason why Austin is located where it is: Austin marks the point along the Colorado River where the flat Texas prairie meets the rough Texas hill country: pretty much the end of the navigable part of the Colorado back in pioneer days.)

Lawrence got caught up in Austin river/lake talk. More specifics on the County Line locations.

County Line on the Lake is on an inlet of Lake Austin (post edited), just east of 360. That is the one that is on the "river", since Town Lake is more river than lake.

County Line on the Hill is across the river off Bee Caves road (actually very close to One World Theater for those familar with that old ALX venue). County line on the Hill has a awesome view.

Both have great bread. I love that County Line bread. I like the BBQ too, but I don't want to debate BBQ with Lawrence again.

Back to topic, this ALX will utilize the lakes, something we have not done in the past. Something different for the returning visitors.

Nathan

P.S. - Lawrence, there are actually six "lakes" plus Town Lake, a few of them are farther out and not really considered Austin metro, I think that is what you meant by saying there were only three lakes.

Here is a link about the Highland lakes of Central Texas.
