Melbourne Lindy Exchange - 22-25 November 2007

#1 Post by dogpossum » Tue Apr 17, 2007 12:28 am

Just a heads up thread to let you all know that the seventh annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange will be on again in November, in Melbourne Australia.
We like to let international guests know earlier so they can get onto the flight booking thing ASAP.

The last couple of years have seen the MJDA (Melbourne Jazz Dance Association) running the MLX as an all-social dancing event, and it's now the largest of its type in the country, attracting hundreds of dancers from all over Australia and overseas. We have guests who come each year for MLX from all over the world, including San Diego, Stockholm, London, Auckland, Singapore and Perth, and provide hosting for MLX pass holders with local dancers.

Last year we featured 5 bands and 10 DJs on our program, some of Melbourne best dancing venues (including the Famous Spiegeltent) 2 late night rooms running til 6am every night and a host of fun touristy daytime adventures.

We're still in the early planning stages for MLX7, but we're currently considering sedating Brian/Bob the Builder, who's sourcing our bands. He's come up with some seriously awesome local (and interstate) artists, and we're looking at somewhere between 4 and 5 bands over our 4 day weekend... more if we don't get the the tranquiliser gun on Brian in time.

We're also going to be looking for the best DJs we can get our hands on for MLX7. We like to showcase local talent, but if you're interested in DJing at MLX7 and you're not an Australian, I encourage you to drop me a PM or an email on sam [at] mjda [dot] org [dot] au . Australians are notoriously friendly (even annoyingly so sometimes), and they like to party like it's nineteen. thirty. nine.

MLX is becoming an annual experiment in hedonism, but most visitors take time out to enjoy the city's cosmopolitan side (which means that they go to local bars where everyone wears black and talks about obscure Icelandic pop bands). We also have a large Mediteranean community and consequently give good cake.

We've found most of our international guests (and we get quite a few from Europe, Canada and the US in particular, but also Korea, Singapore and New Zealand) like to combine MLX with a bit of tourist action.

November is the last month of spring in Australia, and is an excellent time to visit the cooler southern states like Tasmania (our only island state, and home to some truly stunning national park action) and Victoria (Melbourne is the capital of Victoria). Days are usually very clear and blue and sit on about 25 degrees C. Spring evenings in Melbourne rarely warrant a sweater.

Most MLX visitors move up the east coast to Sydney, then on up the coast to Queensland for the Great Barrier Reef, rainforests, tropical islands and masses of other, nauseatingly beautiful stuff.

If you go west several thousand kilmetres across lots and lots of desert, you'll get to Perth in Western Australia (home to people like Trev and other lovely Western Australians). They also have lots of dolphins and beaches and things as well.

Most MLX visitors make friends with dancers in other states then go on to visit them after the exchange.

If you're interested in MLX7, drop me an email or PM - I'll be happy to answer questions (or at least make up something interesting).
