[Answered] My My Ain't that Something, The Four Vees

#1 Post by hepcat72 » Fri Jul 26, 2013 4:41 pm

Hey Guys,

So there's this song in the 1945 movie "I Love a Bandleader" called (according to IMDB) "My My Ain't that Something" by "The Four Vees" (possibly the Jordan Sisters). So I already know what the name of the song is and who it's by, but I cannot find a copy of it other than the one I recorded from the movie itself. Does anyone have a copy without the actor's lines through the intro and middle of the song or know where it can be purchased?

Thanks,
Rob

Great tune! I did some poking around but I can't help much.

Here's an early version of the song: http://youtu.be/T_oWcyeHzwM

The song was used in "Stormy Weather" recorded under the title "My, My, Ain't That Somethin'" by the film's ensemble (Cab Calloway, Bojangles, Lena Horne...)

As for the group, it's The Vs which is made up of Laverne Whittaker, Willie (Von) Floyd, Anne Ivy Glascoe and pianist Lady Will Carr (names may not be exactly right). The group started as the vocal trio in The Floyd Ray Orchestra. I found a track here: http://youtu.be/N2V6UV-ZhnM

So far I can't find any evidence of The Vs making any studio recordings other than in this film. I suspect the chance of finding a clean recording is low.

So I found a little more, even a hint that they did do some recordings with the United Record Company:

If this is the label (1950s), then nothing was released : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Records

Great song and performance - thanks for posting 8)

When I see and hear old video clips like that I tend to feel a mixture of delight in discovering them and frustration that that's all that's left of such a great group. I suspect that there weren't any recordings. I've come across quite a lot of great 30s and 40s songs like this that were recorded in films and 'soundies' but never released on record.

By the way, I recorded the segment of the film with the song off of the digital airwaves if anyone wants a copy.
