I've been wondering about the song in this clip for about six years. Please help me so I can stop having to watch this damn clip with Doug in it once a year.

You're My Only Hope Obi-Wan

I was too lazy to convert it to audio and then host it just to make it easy on your eyes.

The irony is, I think Reuben was DJing that contest.

Good cut. No clue. Doesn't quite sound like a period band, but I dunno.

Well, I'll admit, I went and watched it. I don't think it was me cause I didn't recognize the song. In the background I see a fuzzy black person (youtube, you BLOW at your primary function, displaying video!) behind what appears to be DJ equipment (again, you suck youtube!) and I could be wrong but it might have been Paulette playing the song. This video also features everyone's favorite MC! haha

Here's what I'd suggest, Ryan. Think of all the modern bands that play good swing music (stretching back through the 90s). Track down their leaders' or webmasters' e-mail addresses. Also put some radio DJs on the list, like Jerry Jelinek, that PA show's DJs, and the Riverwalk Jazz DJ. Host the soundclip on your website. Send out a polite letter to them all, asking if they have any inkling which of their colleagues in the jazz world it sounds like, since you'd like to track down the name of the song (and preferably the name of the artist). Get a few more e-mail addresses from there and repeat.

It might be easier to see who was djing that year and ask them. There is someone else on the platform with Paulette and Announcerman. Maybe it's Terry from Minnesota. The song sounds like it's a trumpet band leader, probably from the 50s when the shuffle rhythm was popular. Maybe someone like Jonas Jones or Cootie Williams.

The DJ is the guy all the way to the right in the clip. Oddly enough it looks like Audra is the girl standing next to him on the stage (Reub was she there in 2001?).

I asked Paulette about the DJ who was in the clip and she said she had no idea.

Kat, I am WAY too lazy for that.

I have this album, and unfortunately they are not the same track.

Guess was wrong - back to the drawing board. It sounds like Jonah Jones to my uneducated ear. :?

The guy ALL the way to the right is Terry, and he's behind a podium. I don't think he would be DJing from behind a podium. There is someone just to the right of Paulette though, who looks like they are attending to something... perhaps he is the actual DJ, though again, can't make out who the hell it is.

No, she wasn't there in 2001, and even when she did go she was never on the stage.

This is a fun little game; the players don't sound as professional as Jonah Jones et al, but listening to some of his albums makes me want to get some:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... foxqehldte

and although Earl Hines big band is good, I love his later small group work.

as far as the original clip - anyone know what song it is? At least you could narrow down a little bit from there; I don't recognize the song at all. I think it's a modern group; I think the sound is bad also, but maybe that's just from being recorded back in 2001.

I FOUND IT. :)

After being decidedly less lazy (Thanks Kat), I sent some emails out this morning with the clip attached, including to some members of Jim Cullum's band.

One of them told me "the tune sounds like 'Spanish Shawl' with a wrong second chord."

And he was totally dead on. It sounds different from every other version. It's a Kid Ory version from the 50's.

Now for the bad news...

It's only available on the out of print "Complete Kid Ory Verve Sessions" Mosaic Box Set. So how to get a hold of this is still a challenge.

:D To finding out what it was after 6 years. :( To finding out it's fucking hard to get.

If anyone finds this same track is on some other album (one not listed by allmusic), please let me know.
