Hi all, it's my first post on here. So far I'm just in this to collect music.

ulhs'05 slow finals

What is the song being played by the band? Warning that file is pretty large at 77 megs. It's the slow finals at ULHS 2005.

I wasn't there, but as far as I can figure, it's being played (live) by the Wolverine Classical Jazz Band. They sound great in the videos.

Yes, I understand the Wolverines are much better live than on the cd I have. I'll have to make out there to MN sometime to hear them.

Hmm. I have that cd, will have to give that version another listen. A couple of other versions i've heard include versions by Ray Brown, Joe Turner (the piano player), Nicholas Payton with Doc Cheatham, Eddie Condon, and Errol Garner. Recently a local band, the Brooks Tegler Big Band, played a sweet version at a dance.

I've heard some of their recordings, and yes, they are much better live. I like that they play a lot of Lunceford charts.

Y'know, they carry a lot of tunes I think of as the hottest of Henderson, Goodman, Kirk, Ellington, Webb, etc...I think they just haven't rehearsed them yet.

(I spied on a bandmember's stand once during setup.)

I'm really hoping I can make a few requests.

They've also got a great song whose title I've forgotten, but when a singer named Judi Donaughey sings with them, they do a composition she & the pianist wrote some decades ago. It's about the season being almost summertime, and it's one of the few modern compositions I've heard that swings with a whole lot of energy and isn't cheesy. (Bill Elliot has some, too, and I know there are other bands I can't name offhand but about whom I'd say the same thing--still, overall, not many new swing songs are being written nowadays, and I think this tune's worth mentioning.)

This has absolutely nothing to do w/ the thread, of course, but I'm just saying that if anyone wants to hear more Wolves tunes live, they should come to Minneapolis and ask. Or hey, with enough clamor, maybe they'll even find recording again worth a go.

I think the version the band is playing is from the Basie book of the late 60s or early 70s.

If my failing memory serves me right, it is a Sammy Nestico arrangement.

Not having my stash of CDs in front of me, I'm guessing it is one one of the Pablo releases of the Basie Big Band from the early 1970s.

I recall playing the chart in jazz band while in college. All of the Nesticao charts are great fun to listen to and play.
