Music That Matters To [You]

#1 Post by mousethief » Wed Apr 28, 2004 1:40 pm

If you're a Starbucks addict (or are stuck in some over-franchised, white-washed, soccer mom, cookie-cutter suburb where you have to go to a chain to get a decent cup of coffee *huff* *huff*), then you are probably familiar with this concept.

For those of you who aren't follow this link for what matters to Willie Nelson:

Willie Nelson Artist’s Choice

What matters to you in 15 songs or less?

great topic! I am a bona fide Starbucks addict and I like looking through the Artists Choice CDs - the Ray Charles one has a bunch of good danceable tunes on it.

Is this meant for swing music or can we expand to other music also? I'll list songs that have specific meanings for me:

Bach - Invention in F
Beethoven - 9th Symphony - "Ode to Joy"
Joy Spring - Clifford Brown (and I like the vocalese version too)
Rhapsody in Blue - Gershwin
Time and Tide - Basia
5 Months, 2 Weeks, 2 Days - Louis Prima
I Love Being Here with You - Ernestine Anderson
Africano - Earth, Wind and Fire
Stardust - Willie Nelson
A-Tisket, A-Tasket - Ella Fitzgerald
Out West - Swing Session
Lush Life - Rickie Lee Jones - "Girl at Her Volcano"
Don't Get Around Much Anymore - Duke Ellington
Mahogany Hall Stomp - Louis Armstrong
Handyman - Alberta Hunter

I'm not sure what 'matters' means in this context. But music that is significant to me one way or another would include

Space Clinic - Total Eclipse
Blue Skies - Lavay Smith
Jazznocracy - Eddie Reed
Forever Blue album - Chris Isaak
Texas Flood album- Steve Ray Vaughan
Are You Experienced album - Jimi Hendrix
Dark Side of the Moon album - Pink Floyd
Beethoven's 5th, 6th, and 9th Symphonies - Herbert von Karajan
Five Years of Eye Q - compilation
The Glory of Love - Peter Cetera
Fade to Black - Metallica
Antarctica album - Vangelis
Light My Fire and The End -- The Doors

and the song that I use to christen any new stereo system:

Bach Brandenburg Concerto #3

The sense I got from the original post and from Willie's list is songs that would define you or that would give a person a sense of who or what you are. Or even songs that were critical to you in a particular juncture of your life.

So in that spirit of things, here's my 16 (I just couldn't whittle it down to 15). Which I reserve the right to change at a later date. :)

The Police - Tea in the Sahara
The Police - I Burn For You
Sting - Brand New Day
Sting - When We Dance
Sting - Why Should I Cry For You?
Prince - Nothing Compares to You (live with Rosie Gaines)
Robbie Robertson - Somewhere Down the Crazy River
Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong - Can't We Be Friends?
Ella Fitzgerald - Don't Be That Way
The Church - Under the Milky Way Tonight
Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs (live on "The Dance")
Nina Simone - Feelin' Good
Eva Cassidy - I Wish I Was a Single Girl Again
Aretha Franklin - Evil Gal Blues
Dinah Washington - Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby
Nicole Henry - Summertime

3 albums immediately come to mind... I have many other important songs/albums, but these are on my all time list.

Sign 'o the times (album) - Prince
Texas Flood (album) - SRV

My second favorite Prince song (a very close second) is off that release... "Adore".
