Same goes for Joe Williams' swinging waltz version of "Honeysuckle Rose" (off the album "
One For My Baby"), though it still sounds pretty damn cool.

wow... "boogie blues" in 3/4... what album has that?
(for the record: the regular version of "boogie-blues" is on disc 3 of The Gene Krupa Story [proper box], and it's kick ass... anita sings jimmy rushing blues verses... awesome rhythm...)

that album also has "johnny one note" which I LOVE ... although it's not really for dancing and is in fact rather kitschy in an incredibly frenetic and hummable way.

So I'm dj'ing a dance tomorrow night (along with Brenda) and I have to have one or two Watlz and Tango songs handy. I don't want to buy anything just for this so I'm hoping I have something suitable in my existing collection which constists mainly of vintage swing material (lot of early Basie, Goodman, Lunceford, Ellington, etc.).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Buona Sera by Louis Prima begins as a faux tango and goes into Prima-style swing.
All Blues by Miles Davis is a waltz.
I'm stretching here. Your best bet is probably to pirate....I mean, download stuff from the net. For tango, anything by Carlos Gardel is good. Waltz, uh, dunno, there's lots of pop but nothing springs to mind right now. Whipping Post by Allman Brothers. :)

Joe Turner (pianist not vocalist) has a version of Jitterbug Waltz that's good and danceable, and that you might find in your collection some place. It's off of
Joe's Back in Town among others.
Tango music for actual tango dancers is a much more difficult genre to dip into. I'd be very reluctant about throwing in some tango at a venue like the century where presumably there will be genuine tango dancers, as I would be afraid of coming off like one of those wedding DJ's who play "swing" music for us.
Of course, I could "lend" you some waltz/tango as I have quite a bit, but that would require coming to tacoma, which would make buying stuff seem much more attractive to you i'm sure. _d

Here are a few waltz's that I play when I get a request for one. The Bjork song is a waltz & lindy hop/foxtrot. She goes back and forth between 3/4 time and 4/4 time. Its a fun song.

Has anyone ever DJ'ed Jitterbug Waltz done by Fats Waller? I just got The Very Best of Fats Waller and it has a version with him playing the organ; I can't quite decide if I like it or not.
I ended up playing Montagne Saint Genevieve (Django's Waltz) by Pearl Django on New Year's Eve --- it was too fast for most people to waltz too, but the one dance instructor who loves turning waltzes enjoyed it!
I did play a nice tango "I've Got to See You Again" - from the Nora Jones album - Tonya had played it about a year ago and it makes for a nice romantic song. I also borrowed a tango mix, but I agree with what has been said here, not knowing the dance it's tough to pick out songs that would fit well!
