argentine tango newbie help

#1 Post by lipi » Sun Oct 29, 2006 9:41 pm

ideally, i'd like to find a forum like this one for argentine tango dj's. any leads?

failing that, some websites, books, or lists of suggested compilations to start would be peachy, too. i know piazzolla is too nuevo for my taste (and strictly not done at milongas in b.a., i hear), gardel is too lyric-y, and di sarli is a basie-like figure i ought to love. that's about it, though.

Carlos Libedinsky is the man.
Hugo Diaz is pretty good.
Lalo Schifrin varies, look for the "Tango" movie soundtrack.

A google search on "Argentine tango music" immediately turns up this very informative-looking site:

In addition to those you've mentioned, Pugliese and Firpo are pretty good (in my very limited knowledge of tango music).

Oh yeah, I forgot:

This orchestra is VERY GOOD. VERY VERY GOOD. And they play live gigs.
